Re: OZIL No shows, Injury, illness ??
Not sure what meeting Erdogan has to do with football tbh. The Germans are just looking for a scapegoat.
That said, Ozils attitude in general after he got his big pay rise last January, was shocking. To clearly cherry pick games is not in Arsenal’s interests, and Emery I am sure will not allow that this continue. I expect the squad to be fitter than for many years this season, it was ridiculous Wenger giving players time off and only getting them back in training a few weeks before the first PL game season in season out. If Ozil isn’t fit by the City game he shouldn’t play, no carrying players anymore.

So why meet him then ? He was the one that mixed politics with sport by meeting a leader of another country. Why would he meet the leader of a country he wasnt born in and doesnt play for, and what gives him the right to express his support for re-election of a guy in a country that he cant even vote in ? Whilst I agree 100% that the backlash against him is largely racist, he cannot expect a free pass on an issue that he had no place being involved in
Re: OZIL No shows, Injury, illness ??
Not so according to arseblog who stated that he rejoined the squad on saturday - I know that it is still an "early" return, but my point is that he has had a week longer off than reus who was in the same german squad

Some interesting stuff on his meeting with the turkish pm that I wasnt aware of - IF it is true, the turkish pm has a bad history of how he deals with anyone who speaks out against him, and apparently his human rights policy is awful

Re: OZIL No shows, Injury, illness ??
I'm sure that there was some racism in the response to Ozil's photo, but I think it's too easy to dismiss the response as just racism.
To be seen happily cuddling up to the leader of a foreign power is stupid. If Harry Kane had Russian ancestors and was photographed arm-in-arm with Putin, he might get some stick.
Erdogan has imprisoned hundreds of lawyers and journalists, and sacked tens of thousands of civil servants, police, military and judges. He is a dictator in all but name.
I'm sure Ozil has mixed feelings about his German/Turkish heritage, but when you play for your country, your loyalty should never be held up to question. He was stupid.
However, I couldn't give a toss provided he starts delivering for us. The international breaks will be a nice opportunity for him to have a rest.

Are footballers restricted from whom they meet in their spare time? There is nothing political about meeting the leader of the country his family originates from, he was on a visit to London as far as I am aware and naturally members of the Turkish community will want to meet Erdogan. The event that Ozil met Erdogan was supposed to be charitable anyway.augie wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 6:37 amnut flush gooner wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 5:00 amNot sure what meeting Erdogan has to do with football tbh. Just seems bizarre the way this has been blown up. It's like if an English player of Indian origin meets Nahendra Mohdi before England are due to play India in an international cricket match, would anything be made of that?
I appreciate that Erdogan has a suspect regime, but it seems that a lot of western governments turn a blind eye to this. Why castigate Ozil for this? And what does it have to do with the World Cup?
Mountain out of a molehill imo. Ozil has far more pressing things to deal with like his shocking attitude to Arsenal for much of last season, after getting that big rise.

And now the backlash/fight back begins
http://www.skysports.com/football/news/ ... li-hoeness
I said earlier that ozil's career (and life in the future even) is in serious trouble if it doesn't work out for him this season - he will be absolutely castigated in germany from this day forth, to the point that I don't know if he could return to retire there anytime soon. If his initial meeting and declaration of support for Erdogan was ill advised, his statement last night was bordering on suicidal regardless of how true the racism statement is

You are probably right, however this is football fans we are dealing with. If Germany had had a decent world cup nothing would have been said however they didn't so it all "why don't you f**k off and play for Turkey then?". Not saying it is right however it is to be expected.nut flush gooner wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 8:13 am

I would also say meeting and presenting a shirt to a political leader who is seeking re-election and has a suspect human rights record, just before the world cup was not the smartest thing to do.

He was castigated for it BEFORE germany even went to the world cup, so failure in russia didnt cause this issue, but merely compounded it.
Tbf I also dont think that the backlash is purely football fans - this issue goes beyond football imo

Quite a statement by Uli Hoeness
Although have to admit I laughed at the line that he last won a tackle before the 2014 WC
DB10 will be sending a hit team to sort out Hoeness

Are you kidding me?.With Erdogan's human right's record Ozil should be keeping well away from him.nut flush gooner wrote: ↑Mon Jul 23, 2018 5:00 amNot sure what meeting Erdogan has to do with football tbh. The Germans are just looking for a scapegoat.

Well done Ozil now lets see you perform like we know you can this coming season
Re: OZIL No shows, Injury, illness ??
Was not aware that ozil has been voted german player of the year 5 times
The most recent was in 2016 and at that time he had won it 5 times in 6 years

lost a lot of respect for erdogan when i saw him pictured with that fraud ozil
honestly though, his international retirement should benefit us, will be interesting to see how this affects his performances next season and if he gets games off like under wenger.
