i think if we strike iran we are asking for big trouble. it worries me. if the uk supports any atack it just opens ourselves up to even more terroism. imo we should stay out of the middle east completely and let them sort it out themselves. we should not intervene in syria and shouldnt have in libya. libya is a complete mess now, with as anyone with half a brain saw, the power vacuum being filled by islamist fundamantelists, even though there has been uprisings against these groups increasing influences. countries like iraq and libya rneeded a strongman figure, who may not have ruled in a way the we like or have the human rights records we would like, but could forcibly unite the countries and stop the rise of religious extremism. imo saddam/gaddafi, despite there appaling human rights and persecution of certain areas of there societies (eg. marsh kurds) were the lesser of 2 evils to what has happened since they were deposed.

dpmunky, says you are in arkansas? whats that like, proper usa isnt it? none of th touristy stuff you get on the east and west coasts. do you ever see tourists/english people there?

Odds are that Israel will strike Iran.

The damage will delay the Iran nukes, but not stop them, so there will be a round two with Israel and America joining up plus clandestine and undeclared help from UK and other Commonwealth special forces.

If you let Iran have nukes, it is even bigger trouble than terrorist retaliation.

Any just my thoughts/guesses on the matter.

I'm curious why you think Iran will pose a bigger threat then say Pakistan, N.Korea, or Kurdistan? All of them are trying or have the thing and dont like us. By all means I'm not for them having it, but why are we focused on Iran and not the other "axis" (for lack of a better term) powers as well?

You're spot on with the Israelis kicking the whole thing off though... I just dont want to see another full scale conflict. I'm not sure either of our countries are in a position, financially, to handle it.

mantis: We honestly dont get too many english down here. There is a good pub around here run by a couple of Irish guys, they're super friendly to the non-american football crowd but other then the 2 of them or the occasional english or irish patron, I dont see or know many.

and yeah, this is the proper usa down here, hidden away from the rest of the world

My guess is that the West thinks India will cancel out the Pakistan nuke threat to an extent, but the West is nonetheless fighting Jihadists in Pakistan using drone strikes to try and keep the state as stable as possible.

North Korea is a problem, hideous things happening there with concentration camps and forced labour camps.
My guess is the West think South Korea to an extent cancels out the North's threat, but it is a major potential flashpoint.
I just think that Western intelligence has been thwarted by a totalitarian regime, and I cannot rule out any Western military strike.

Not a nation state and the Kurds are too busy fighting Turkey.

Iran though has been fighting the West since the revolution - over 30 years of undeclared war.
Hizbollah is it's proxy army, have already as good as taken over Southern Lebanon as an autonomous region.
Started a war versus Israel 2006.
Hamas is another proxy, has established totalitarian regime in Gaza, numerous missile attacks on Israel.
Hizbollah not limited to Lebanon, has carried out estimated 300 assassinations in Turkey.
Also has massive US Dollar counterfeighting operation, and arms running in South America.
Iran too propping up Assad in Syria with special forces troops and weapons.

Bottom line is Iran has some military might and is not scared of using it.
Has threatened to blockade Gulf oil shipping lanes which would worsen world economy and cause environmental disaster.
Has a leader who believes in armageddon type scenario involving Islamic Messiah (12th Imam).
Is a Shia country, carried out multiple suicide attacks in Iran-Iraq war and Lebanese civil war.
This suicide mentality could mean that they would launch a nuke at Israel, risking consequences, but rejoicing in damage caused to Israel.

As others in the thread have said, the concept of mutual deterence will not work with Iran, they are a theological leadership, not just a political ideology.

So cannot afford to take the risk they get a nuke.

getting back on subject pakistan will not be a threat. all though there are extremists and they are soft on terror and there security forces are deceidly dodgy, the general populace and certain ruling elites (when the army are not involved) are quite westernised. i think the historical commonwealth linkage is keyand a major reason why pakistan is not viewd and will not go down the same road as rogue states. such a simple factor as cricket and the public outcry there when the sri lankan team got attacked says to me that the population will not let a religious extremist anti western leader ever take control
