To be fair you make a very good point about the big 4 supporting tendancy due to not having support for a local side passed down, maybe thats why it always seems as if clubs from areas with high numbers of ethnic minorities dont see that population trend reflected in attendances. You're probably right, the theory probably isnt right, but I just thought I'd throw it out there for discussion. Thats one of the troubles with threads like this, people are sometimes reluctant to make a point in case they are labelled as a racist or whatever, and this is one thing that imo prevents good discussions taking place.
I'm sure that there definitely is institutionalised racism in football, just as there is in the police force and pretty much in employment generally, but it would be interesting to see some proper research taken on ethnic minority involvement in football (from supporting through to playing, coaching and managing) to highlight exactly what problems are perceived and how best to address them. I'd love to see some study undertaken where 100 black footballers are asked about their ambitions after football and for those who say they dont want to get into coaching/ management it would be interesting to know why, is it just a personal choice or do they feel that they would be fighting a losing battle with regards to trying to get a fair shot at it. It would also be interesting to hear from black lads who are involved in coaching whether they feel that their race affects their chances of moving up to management and from those in management whether they feel that they have to battle discrimination to remain in their posts and progress to higher level clubs. That is the kind of study that would prove interesting and that might lead to a good policy being set forth and implemented to attempt to address the imbalance in the figures.
