1989 will want us to spend £60m on Barkley after that wonderful 2 minutes

Looking through the squad's Belgium have got some quality players ... and the three Spurs ones. Wouldn't mind seeing them or any new name on the trophy but cant really see it happening.

Am I right in thinking there has never been a world cup played in South America with a European winner? So will probably still be the case after this but I cant see it being Chile (who voted for them? )

It's true that no European team has won it in South America, but then again this is the first one over there in 36 years, in total only 4 tournaments played there. Football has changed so much since 1978, players are a lot more travelled in general so it will be interesting to see how well the European teams do. Being realistic from the Europeans you can't really look further than Germany and Spain but it does seem to be set up nicely for Argentina. Their group games, aside from being straight forward for a squad with their quality, are based near their border and in the cooler part of the country. I'd be amazed, even with their well documented defensive woes, if they didn't at least make the semi's.

Well looking forward to the whole tournament in general. Despite all the problems I think it will all turn out well, and just got the feeling Messi is finally going to leave his mark on the very biggest stage.

Some interesting thoughts there mate.

Of course if we include world cups played in the whole of the American continent and add in the two in Mexico and one in USA, then we still have no European winners from 7 tournaments. And that's up to 1994 but I take your point about football changing and agree with you that its hard to look past Germany and Spain from any potential European winner this time.

And although I went off international football some time ago, I don't include the actual tournaments in that and so I'm really looking forward to this world cup too.

Yeah I was also thinking the two in Mexico certainly might as well have been classed the same as the South American tournaments. Although am I right in thinking that the only non-European team to win it in Europe or indeed the only time it was done, was Brazil in 1958? So those non-Europeans aren't so great either :D If anything this 'duck' was kind of broken in 2010 with Spain ie a Euro team winning it outside of Europe, although it has to be said the conditions suited the European sides as well, not like in say 1994 or 2002.

I think there are a large percentage of people like that, where they couldn't give a monkeys about the friendlies during the season, but always excited for a World Cup. People like me

If this tournament becomes embroiled in demonstrations and strikes from the host nation, then their copybook will be blighted for all time and they may never get to host another (unless they recycle quatars brown envelopes  ) and I don't think that they should be allowed host another either

Honestly mate, I couldn't give a flying fuck. I've spent a lot of time working in the other Home Nations and the anti-Ingerlund obsession just amuses me. If the you lot really knew how we felt about our own national team it would probably surprise you !
Methinks the Diaby fan club doth protest too much!!

I would have agreed with you till later in the season, when TBF Demichelis did play a few really good matches.

Its going to be Belgium v Argentina in the final, with Lukaku scoring the winner. That said, if the ref descisons are as biased as in South Korea it will be Belgium v Brazil

Don't understand the hype about Belgium. Can anyone really see Lukaku, Dembele and Fellaini with word cup winners' medals. Hazard isn't quite good enough yet to win it on his own. Quarters at best 8)

They have a backline with Kompany, tv5 and the *word censored* at the scum so defensively they will be good. They have a very strong/solid midfield with hazard providing that creative x factor (no nut the bullshit tv show  ). Up front they will have lukaku and miralles so they aint shabby there either. They really have a good team but the lack of top level experience will count against them imo, but make no mistake, 1-11 they are as good as most countries out there 8)
