THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

The thing is although Wenger is the short term problem the long term ambition of the club has to be questioned.
Will any new manager also be asked just to get 4th place too? Probably.

You have to give him credit for keeping us around the top of the also rans league.

Normally we haven't been competing for the title in any meaningful way and we've consistently finished as the best of the rest.

In Europe, we've underperformed in the group stages in recent years compared to our ranking - but last 16's and before that last eights means we're lso there and thereabouts as the "best of the rest"

I firmly believe that Wenger has no intention or inclination to compete with Chelsea/Man City in this country - and with the Reals of Europe. He's found his niche and a formula with which to achieve his and club's objectives.

It's a fair point - you'd have to be pretty tunnel-visioned to think that Wenger is the sole issue. Kroenke will still want us to spend as little money as possible.

But there are two main issues. Firstly, Wenger doesn't make the most of the resources we have - spunking away ridiculous money on wages, bizarre but predictable lack of team selection and tactics, awful transfer policy, an injury record so damning that our methods are clearly blameworthy and this powderpuff mentality that the players really have.

Secondly, Wenger both facilitates and encourages this financial approach. By nailing his colours to the mast Wenger has significantly reduced and diluted the expectations and attitudes of the fans and the directors, and there is no real pressure on the club to perform.

Replacing him is far from guaranteeing success but we know exactly what sticking with him will bring and it's not good enough.

I took the 'one AW' chants mainly as a reaction to last week's events at the train station, rather than the fans giving him their unequivocal backing. I'd imagine that a lot of people who want him out still respect him, and thus are simply standing up for him in the face of abuse.

The commentators are ultra-naive in claiming that 'the fans are happy this week'. It's not fans changing their minds on him after every result - there's distinct sets of AKBs and Wenger Out fans, and it's obvious you're going to hear more from one than the other dependent on the result.

Finally, as I said last week, there will not be a run of results bad enough to cost Wenger his job. Fans on here hoping that happens will have a long wait ahead of them, because we'll always be good enough to beat the poorer sides at home (most of the time, anyway). What needs focusing on and questioning is the 'fourth placed mentality' (i.e. the bigger picture). Only once we've made it known that - as a fanbase - we're not satisfied with merely qualifying for the CL, can we begin to get our point across.

I thought the same, it was more out of sympathy and a nagging respect for AW. Pissed up men abusing a pensioner and all that. Well that backfired. Oh well. We are watching Liverpool lose. Always cheers me up

Where's this so called rebellion then? Its still a tiny minority and the pro-Wenger boys proved it yesterday

afcforever, everyone knows your not an Arsenal fan, so don't be pretending you go to games. As for the fans singing about Wenger yesterday, well this sums up why the board act the way they do. Charge extortionate prices, to watch sub-standard football, yet still have a full stadium every week. Lose to Stoke last Saturday, but beat Newcastle, and everything is great, despite being 13 points behind Chelsea. If I was on the board, and seen that Arsenal fans will accept any crap thrown at them, then why would I change.

I want him gone now, but I've too much respect for what he's done for the club to abuse him.

By 'we', did you mean your lot against Hull? I obviously meant so far this season, not on one game, and even then it isn't near worth the price fans pay. What are the prices at Stamford bridge like?
