After reading a long article about Holl(e)y lately in a guitar magazine, I have to say I was totally unawre of the massive influence this man had on music. The first artist to push his self penned hits, the first artist to use a string section on popular music records, the first artist to promote the lagend that is the Stratocaster and all this while looking like a 'Geek"!

Not a huge fan but I can respect what a great artist he was, and indeed is.

Gus's Holly is great to look at but I'd say a pain in the arse to listen to

Does anybody have any idea what the lyrics on the Don McLean song mean? I have sung along to them for more than 30 years but have shag all clue what they mean.

Don McLean wrote this letter to a broadcast journalist many years ago. I think it was his attampt to stop questions being asked.

As you can imagine, over the years I have been asked many times to discuss and explain my song "American Pie." I have never discussed the lyrics, but have admitted to the Holly reference in the opening stanzas. I dedicated the album American Pie to Buddy Holly as well in order to connect the entire statement to Holly in hopes of bringing about an interest in him, which subsequently did occur.

This brings me to my point. Casey Kasem never spoke to me and none of the references he confirms my making were made by me. You will find many "interpretations" of my lyrics but none of them by me. Isn't this fun?

i'm a massive fan of his music, and have a jukebox stuffed with them. they are still very popular tunes today and familiar to most people , even youngsters.

he was a massive influence on the early rock and roll scene and then onto groups like the beatles and the rolling stones who in turn were inspirations to more modern artists like oasis and paul weller , so it can be argued that he is responsible for even modern music.

there is only a very small memorial at the crash site and he never seems to get the headlines when it comes to 60's music, Elvis is always the bigger star. well not for me .
i often wonder what music he would have gone on to produce had his life not been so tragically cut short .
