Penalty Shootout/Exams

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

If you approach exams like football. You accumulate knowledge over an entire season and then at the end if someone asked you specific questions about The Arsenal you'd be able to answer most of them without revision.

The same goes for study, this whole cram a load of revion in in a short time before the exam negates the fact that you've had up to and almost a year to learn what you need to know for it.

Now get back to studying you tax deging sponging student scum.... :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf: :barscarf:

Best of luck with the exams Bren. 8)

I always thought exams were only useful for finding people that are good at taking exams in a way...

I think an assessment system is fairer and probably more accurate.

I know I'm not DB10 (thank fuck  ) but...

At uni we have some subjects that are totally exam based and others are assessed, and to be fair (and as DB10 said) some people are better in exams than others....

Assessment based subjects are when the tutor/teacher assesses the practical work you have completed over the course of the subject and gives you a mark based on that rather than a 2-3hr written exam.

There's advantages & disadvantages of both methods... but of course, it's more difficult to cheat and pass off other peoples work as your own in an exam.

I suppose it depends what route you want to take. More practical courses like plumber, electrician, Chef, architect, art, etc. will be mostly assessment of your practical work, whereas Mathematics, Science, Engineering, etc. are going to be more weighted toward exams.

I hate exams. I had to sit 15 of them to get my degree. At three hours each thats a whole 45 hours of my life I'll never get back. At my age, I can ill afford the time

I believe that exams are nothing more than a test of memory and nerves. They serve no real purpose and don't actually show that the individual is any good at the subject at all. You can relate this back to football too. I know everything there is to know about being a top footballer. Healthy diet/lifestyle, training, good off ball movement, positioning etc. etc. etc.
Am I any good at football? .......NO!
It's the same with exams. I know a few people that studied the same course as me. They're crap at their jobs because they learned everything parrot fashion to pass an exam but cannot apply it to real life situations. It's like a situation is all going according to how the text book said it was until somebody threw a curve ball in there just for good measure. Suddenly, they cannot deal with it, it does not compute, syntax error, system is shutting down. They're fucked.
I think a better method of assessment is monitoring of coursework and on the job training (no puns please). At least then individuals would be better prepared for how things really work in the big bad world.
