After my initial enthusiasm I started to think about this and while it will be a psychological boost for the club as a whole on the playing side I am not so sure.
Viera is nowhere near the player we remember. Those long telescopic legs are no longer what they were and keep in mind that Inter do not let players go for virtually free for nothing. Also, a player on a pay as you play deal surely shows that this is a risky signing. How many games a year can Viera do these days in the Premiership? I see someone has comparred this to the Owen situtaion at Man Yoo but I would say they are very different. Owen is four years younger for a start and also the fact he is a centre forward means that he can be rotated and rested when need be. Who are Arsenal going to rotate Paddy with and how often? Is getting say 20 Premiership games and whatever in the CL good enough? I cannot see Paddy doing 90 minutes on a Wednesday in say Moscow and then do it all again on Saturday at home to whoever.
Paddy is my absolute god amongst gods. I think he transformed Arsenal as much if not more than Bergkamp and Henry. The Premiership had never seen a player like it before and he bullied and scared the shit out of everyone with the possible exception of Keane.
Whilst I do want the move to happen, if only to keep him out The Heebs hands, I do hope that it does not cloud the wonderful memories we have of Viera in his pomp.
One last thing, yes he is a hero, yes he is a legend but it tells you something about our club that we are signing 33 year olds that are well past their prime. Not so long ago we was selling legends because they were 30, sign of the times hey!
Oh and Augie, Viera at centre-half.............not in a million years!
