It's interesting because yesterday, I found myself thinking exactly the same thing. I'm trying to guard against this kind of thing because last time it happened was in the 07/08 season and then we went and fucked it up.

I think we can win something this season. I'm not quite sure what, but winning a trophy, any trophy is definitely a possibility. In the league, however, we need to make sure we're in a strong position before January, because I think Jan will be a big month for us, what with Song going away, us away at Villa and home against United.

If we come out of the other side of January in the same position as we find ourselves in today, then we've got a great chance.

Thats how you win the league.

The question is whether or not we fold after Christmas.

I also find it funny how you "realists" had spurs down as a massive game and a challenge to the top 4 until we pounded them and suddenly they're back to being an average premier league team.

Make up your mind, there comes a point where you're just going to have to accept we have a good team :banner:

Hmmm... I didn't think we would have trouble against the Spuds (I predicted a 3-1 win) (wrong again...) , and I'm fairly realistic.... :?

I didnt either but a LOT of people did, hence the ecstatic celebration after the 2nd goal. Partly because they're scum but mainly because people were genuinely worried.

I also predicted 3-1 and 4-0 against alkmaar

I had a wager on 3-1 v Spuds and 5-0 v Alkmaar..... (today I'm going to do 2 bets 3-1 and 3-0 (just in case))

Agreed - the goalkeeper and defensive cover situations are a worry but should AW bring in one or two in January we could be involved in nearly everything come the latter part of the season. 50 goals in all competitions by the first week of November tells its own story, if we can defend better as a team, and cut out the individual errors, we will win a lot of games.

Two quick points LDB -

1. I was one of those who went absolutely mental after the 2nd goal v the scum and while it was great to go 2 up and all that, I still have to say that the majority of the reason for my wild celebrating was that we had scored against those scummy fcukers. In fact I, like many many Gooners, almost missed the 2nd goal altogether as I was enjoying a major piss take in the direction of our wannabe neighbours and that type of reaction would not have occured to that degree in any other game.

2. The 2nd point relates to your comment above that I have highlighted. I would respectfully disagree with you that such games are how leagues are won. It is my belief that leagues are won based on those games that your team doesnt play that well and still scrapes out a win or a draw when they should have lost and I am not sure we can do that with this team tbh. We played well at ferguscums place and got nothing while they were poor and got all 3pts and that is the difference for me

Seriously though mate, you have listed several reasons why we are not ready to really challenge over 9 months yet (shit keeper, no defensive back up etc etc) so you need to keep repeating these facts to yourself to get bring you back to the "real world"   A couple of key purchases in jan could make a huge difference but we all know that aint going to happen
Sorry Augie and i hope one day we could be friends again

I agree with what you say and im holding out for a new keeper in January. The thing that worries me is something Frank said in his first post on this thread, very few teams that rely on outscoring opponents actually win anything those teams are normally based on good defensive foundations........ See Augie you bastard youve got me more pessimistic already   Wheres Swale for some back up?

My concern is the transfer window. I can see all our rivals spending BIG. Us doing nothing (Again!), injuries to Cesc and RvP kicking in come February and us falling by the wayside once again come May.

In other words a repeat of 2 years ago.

How alive Wenger is to this scenario will decide our fate.

The january transfer window will decide our season. If we buy a quality keeper, a CH to cover for Gallas and TV and a DM we stand a chance.
But if you look back to 2008 when we were top at Christmas Wenger didnt strengthen. He is so stubborn if we are there or there abouts at christmas will he make the same mistake again or will he have learned?.Because Chelsea Man Utd and Citeh will buy.

I do think there's more maturity and togetherness this year which i put down to inclusion of AA23, TV5 and TWAT25 going. But the west ham game showed there's still a lack of focus and fight at times. The keeper situation is a mess and so i think the league is too tough an ask with this squad. Champion's league though - might be our year. Everyone else bar maybe chelsea and real look weaker. I think we have a chance of something if we keep the right attitude and others don't out strengthen us in january window which they may well do. Everyone is dropping points so it will come down to injury luck, referee luck and our attitude.

We are more than capable of winning a domestic cup but the problem is, our manager won't really go for it! He's only really interested in the CL and PL, which in all honesty I think we are a bit away from winning, for the reasons already stated.
I think AA could more than compensate for Fab if he was out for a while but Weng. would probably still play AA on the wing and put Diaby as playmaker! My problem still lies with Wenger and his stubborness and refusal to do the right thing ie: drop players playing shite (Diaby) and replace where we are weak (goalkeeper).

I'm far more optimistic than I was on Sept 1st........

.........but I'm still a long way from being convinced about this team. I'm not sure they have quite enough grit for the business end of the season.

As usual, I hope they prove me wrong, but I don't think they will.
