My advice is, seriously, to put the tihing on ebay and buy a plug and play mp3 player. The Creative brand produce the best mp3 players going. They do not need any form of drivers or paracitic programs to function and can be connected to any pc via standard usb. after which you can download all the tunes you lost.

Hi Rodders,
I might be able to help you - can you let me know what iPod you are using?
Also, what happened to the music in your iTunes? do you still have all the music files on your PC that you can transer back into iTunes?

Hiya Craig, Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
I have an iPod touch 64 GB. I was updating to the new version of iTunes when the computer crashed and when I restarted, the update finished but my iTunes library was empty! Nada.
I only have about a third of the music on my PC so there's about 2500 songs gone AWOL as a result of this.
Why didn't I do a back up???

Rodders, you owe me a pint. Taken from
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 5#10570955
Open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.
A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack - Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link:

I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay:
