I'll be in the Amazon for a week, and camping (with the anacondas and tarantulas ) for most of that week, so electricity/recharging might be a real issue - hence the spare (fully charged) li-ion batteries!

Although, if I can hold on until next year, I might just mug BrazilianGooner and take his DSLR!

If you dig a hole when you're camping and another man goes in your hole, what would you do?

Buy a DSLR camera. Then take a bit of time to learn the basic tech aspects of photography (depth of field, exposure settings, white balance, shutter speed, aperture settings etc). The difference in the quality of your pictures will amaze you. You don't need to learn everything, just the basics will improve your results a 100 fold.

I bought an Olympus E520 last year and the difference it has made to my photos is incredible. I've exhibited and sold prints in the last couple of months and will be setting up a website in the next month or so. Really enjoying my photography now (and making a few extra quid from it too!).

I don't think I can ever go back to a point and click camera now... well, maybe for football trips...

I also use a CAnon IXUS and am really happy with it. Great little point and shoot good for multiple photos of men in red shirts.

Good point through Basil. If G88ner is trecking, he may want to buy a small camera rather than lug a bigger one around.
No doubt that as DB10 says digital SLR will take better pictures than a Canon Ixus or similar small light "point and shoot" (though Canons Ixus has more complex options if you need them), but if you are trecking 15 miles a day at altitude which would you rather carry?

I reckon going into a camera store and trying them out is essential.

Thanks for the advice people.

I'm fairly sure I'm sticking with the Kodak Z950 as, yes it's a point and shoot, but a more advanced once than many others I've seen, with ultrazoom, and quite a few more advanced features beyond point and click.

Seems to be a sensible start off point to see if I actually like photography - and if I do, I'll invest in a DSLR a little further down the line - and then set up a rival website to DB's, and put his poxy photo's to shame!

Not yet. I have a mate in work designing it for me (free of charge too!). Then I have to set up PayPal and FedEx or similar.

Will have fine art, HDR, landscape, macro, B&W and abstract photos on it. Can't post any photos here yet - I still have to watermark them before they go up on the web.

nice mate. i'm pretty much addicted to HDR, but i guess it will run off sometime (i'm very new to SLR world, bought mine a couple of months ago). i've been going out looking for some good pics every weekend (one of the reasons why i'm not usually here), have some nice pics already. maybe i'll start a blog or something.

when the website is out, don't forget to mention it, db10!
