It's the password sniffing and **** that makes me worry...

+1 for use the free anti virus products.

I don't use windows at home, but I've used AVG in the past with no problems. I thought Avast was free permanently too.

I used to fix people's PCs for them; Norton seemed to create more problems than it solved.

I use Avast its free and very good. I agree with the comments about Norton and McAfee earlier in the thread too

Oh, and I used to have AV (free versions) but would often get viruses, which I've managed to avoid since subscribing to McAfee this time last year.

Cool. You don't need to purchase Kaspersky. Free software is fine.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

this is good for a quick scan that lasts about 5-10min and checks for things most anti-viruses miss and other stuff.

Mozilla Firefox. Used to have IE but had occasional problems and someone (from here?) told me Firefox would be better.

A quick heads up.

A lot of people use these firewalls, Nod32, Zone Alarm and Comodo. The latter being the best but I wouldn't dare use it anymore. It was great when no one had a clue about it. To be honest if you were to use everything I give you, windows built-in firewall works best.

To do:

Google Microsoft Security Essentials, download from their site 64 bit version.
Google Advanced System Care and download.
Go to www.filehippo.com and download spybot & ccleaner (I'm sure you are familiar with both?)

Security wise this is all you need but to enhance your security even further do the following...

Download the latest version of Firefox. Search google for add ons and install the following:

Adblock Plus
WOT
Flagfox
Flashblock
FastestFox

You'll notice ABP in the top corner of your screen (on firefox). Don't click on it, but click the arrow next to it. Go to preferences and click Filters then Add Filter Subscription. You'll see a list. Individually click each one and hit add subcription then apply. Do the same for each on the list.

In future your pages will load up in a split second, as no adds will ever show up again. Plus when you click on a page you will see an F sign (flashblock) over videos for example again, again it speeds up loading time. As does Fastest Fox. So instead of clicking page 2, you'll keep scrolling down and the next page loads up.

WOT rates every site online. So for example when you click on a porn site or dodgy site, on some of them (that are riddled with trojans etc) it will ask if you wish to proceed.

Flagfox shows an icon on the address bar. For instance if you were purchasing something online that you believe to be an english site, then it should show an UK flag, on most occasions you'll find a chinese flag and you'll be aware to p1ss off out of there.

Are you familiar with ccleaner?

If there's anything else you need or if you've any problems fixing this up, just ask.

Should have added info on Advanced System Care.

It' as follows:

Click diagnose system.
Untick defragment and scan.
When the security defense shows up 9000+ faults, click on it.
Then, you'll see infection defense, tick item name to select all and apply. repeat for Website & Cookie defense.

You'll now have less tracking cookies installed on your computer.

Then go to Utilities on ADC and click Admin Tools - Start Manager. Untick anything that doesn't need to be started when your OS starts up. If you don't know what something is, don't tick it. You can also do this with Ccleaner.

Really appreciate all your help M-50. However, if I'm honest, that seems like a whole load of stuff to remember to do - especially for a 40 something techno-phobe like myself.

Still, in the event I don't get anything that's easier to understand and do, will attempt those actions in due course.

And of course I'll buy you a well-deserved beer at WBA. Just look out for a loud-mouth fat guy with glasses, that drives a Black Cab, has a poor sense of direction and answers to the name of Peter.

Use works computers and Interweb and when it all goes to ratshit call the IT helpdesk and then wait for a thirteen year old in glasses to turn up and fix it.

I understand the 'that's way above my head'. Hope you get sorted out via my method or another.

Like I said before it really depends how often you use the web. It you are a daily user for several hours a day, my above piece will really give you a better experience surfing online. If you aren't leave out the firefox add ons and get your security sorted as above.
