london - ale or lager city?

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

I do not like ale but my old man loves Sheperd & Neame's Spitfire!

I think it tastes like shite but I love the adverts.

The latest shining edition to our cask ale range, SA Gold was launched in 2006. Its refreshing and clean taste instantly proved popular with both consumers and industry experts winning awards only a year after being launched.

SA Gold is a full-flavoured, hoppy and refreshing golden ale. Careful use of hops creates a satisfying bitterness, perfectly balanced by vibrant citrus aromas and complex hop flavours from late-hopping using Cascade and Styrian Goldings. A deliciously satisfying and refreshing pint!

The above is evil.

The below is worse

I forgot where i lived after going out to wet a friends babys head.

45 is a continental style Welsh beer with a classic continental taste. It is a well rounded beer that appeals to the drinker looking to experience a mid-ranged ABV product that you would expect to find on the continent. '45' is golden and vibrant in colour, served extra cold, and has a 4.5% ABV.

45 is the official beer of the Football Association of Wales

Haven't tried this one.

Brains Black is an exciting new stout from Brains. This finest Welsh stout has a bitterness and a distinctive dark malt flavour that is instantly recognisable as a true reflection of this style of beer. It has already proven extremely popular in consumer taste tests appealing to both new and established stout drinkers, and combined with its distinctive and contemporary identity, Brains Black is set to become a classic stout.

It also puts a great big black log in your toilet the next morning.

A mate of mine once told me how he brought a mate of his over from London for a weekend on the beer at home. Now this fella had never drank Guinness so they went out on the Friday night and had a session on Guinness. The following morning the Londoner got up (hungover) and went to the jacks. He came out 15 minutes later with a concerned look on his face so my mate asked him if he was allright. At this point the Londoner informed him that he thought he had internal bleeding and wondered if he should go the hospital. When asked why he thought this he said that if was the colour of his stool! Turns out, that as I mentioned before, the guy never drank Guinness and therefore never had (what we call) a (black) Guinness shite.

True story

that is why i don't drink the stuff much it makes your toilet look like tar pit, and you better have enough bog roll the next morning

Personally I love "Ye Olde Racist Engerlish" Ale - an earthy mix, heavy carry with a somber tone, quaint floral note…

IT'S JUST FUCKING BEER YOU PRETENTIOUS TWATS. DRINK IT, GET DRUNK, FUCK SOME DODGY BIRD UP AGAINST THE CHIPPER WALL ON THE WAY HOME, SLAP A KEBAB DOWN YOUR THROAT, PUKE, WAKE UP HOURS LATER IN THE BATHTUB WITH MYSTERIOUS UDI'S ALL OVER YOUR BODY, REGRET IT ALL THE NEXT DAY. REPEAT. :-P

Erm... I actually like a good ale meself.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I just drink the stuff :D . Half the problem is a lot of pubs source from the same main stream breweries. Those breweries own several Commercial lagers etc....

Just looked up a few things:

Heineken International apart from Heineken also produces Amstel and Fosters.

Carlsberg brewery group own lagers such as:
San Miguel (UK)
Special brew. (Have you tried this BG? )
Tetley (UK)

Scottish Courage have:
all Courage drinks.
Beamish
McEwan's
Newcastle Brown Ale
John Smith's
Brands licensed to them include:
Foster's (again!)
Kronenbourg

H.P Bulmer produces:
Bulmers Original Cider
Bulmers Light Cider
Bulmers Pear Cider
Strongbow
Scrumpy Jack
Woodpecker Cider

Diageo is the holding company for some of the most recognisable alcohol brands, including:
Beer: Guinness, Red Stripe, Harp Lager, Kilkenny, Kaliber (non alcoholic)
They also have: Smirnoff, Gordons, Captain Morgains, Bushmills, Archers, Pimm's & Baileys to name a few.

Already you can see the trend and most of the commerical lagers are already listed. It's getting increasly difficult to find pubs which stock good beers.
Don't know if you're aware BG but the prices of alcholol keep rising (taxes). UK pubs are closing at the rate of 1 a week. The supermarkets are much cheaper for booze so many are choosing the cheaper option.

Which means public houses are less likely to stock the more expensive specialist beers/ales.

A question for the Oirish lads. Do most pubs over there now have a decent range of draught beers?

I've not been over there for many a year. Most pubs I went to offered Guiness, Harp lager or Smethicks(?) bitter. The Guiness was great. The other two were pisswater.

Oh.....and do they still sell red lemonade??? :? :D

The average pub will generally have 27 Guinness taps, Smithwicks, Budweiser, Carlsberg, Coors Light, Heineken, Bulmers (the Irish one, ye call it Magners). I'm probably missing one or two but certain other pubs will have a much larger selection where you can get other European beers such as Hoegaarden, Leffe etc.

In Dublin you'll find nearly every lager under the sun at one pub or another. All lager is pisswater but it'll do the job on ya!

Smithwicks is a red ale and isn't too bad olgit. Not as good as Caffrey's Ale though. And yep RED lemonade is still available. A pint of Caffrey's Ale with a dash of red lemonade in a chilled glass is just perfect on a hot summers day... 8)

BG I tell you what next time you are over I think I have found the perfect place for you.

Have a look at the beer selection here:

15 minutes on the bus, amazing selection. Bit pricey but still... mind, don't go in on a Chelsea matchday.
