They are not like for like but I'd take Essien any day. Song has improved and even placed two sweet passes on Saturday but his overall game (passing, tackling, tracking back etc) are just about average or slightly above - too many intricate passing moves break down when he bombs forward as he doesn't have the same quality of first touch/technique as Cesc or Nasri. He has improved vastly but he is no where near Essien's level.
Should point out I have nothing against Song bombing forward as such, but only if he can then recover and track back. Unfortunately his lack of pace can be exposed when he does get up front.

Song is more of a "Sitting" midfielder who's main talent is his tackling, but who will charge forward several times during a game and can play a decent forward pass. This season he has played a bit higher up the pitch than last, but cannot be described as an attacking midfielder.
Essien is an all action midfielder who's main asset is his workrate, but who can tackle too, can bomb forward and does get goals.
Essien is better than Song but Song is much improved on the player of two seasons ago.
With all due respect quartz that is absolute garbage - he is absolutely shite at tackling hence the number of cheap yellow cards he has picked up in the last couple of seasons Song's main "aseet" is his interceptions but essien at 50% still pisses over song every day of the week and only a fool would think otherwise which might explain this thread

Yes and we did go in for him but the chavs threw more money at their clubs and wages wise so they are there.Bergkamp-Genius wrote:Song or Essien...
There is no comparison between the two it's like comparing Bendtner with Drogba, Essien is quicker, more dynamic, more aggressive much more of a handful..
He's wasted at Chelski they don't get the most out of him but he would be perfect for us, Cesc and Essien in the middle together would be the perfect combination...Essien would give us the pace, the bite and the drive and Cesc the craft..
same with that mikl - he was at UTD but chavs threw more money

Yep, his tackling can be best described at times as clumsy...plus he doesn't conceal very well, and ends up with loads of bookings because of it.augie wrote:QuartzGooner wrote:Different types of player.

Songs main asset is his physical strength, surely.augie wrote:QuartzGooner wrote:Different types of player.

The best ride is the Eboue ride where you sit on eboue, sing his song while he crawls up wenger's rectum to collect his bonus for reaching the top 4 5 years in a rowflash gunner wrote:DB10GOONER wrote:In LouderLand it is, mate!LeftfootlegendGooner wrote:Is this really a question

complex poser this,do you judge them on this season, the past seasons ,or potential seasons.essien imo has been at times the best there is but that was before his knee ops etc ,song has it all as has diaby but can he take it to the next level?all in all at t6his moment i would still go for essien but not with any great conviction.
