My main thought is that we have plenty of "Squad Players".
The influx of youth will boost this.
So four new player signings should be good quality ages 24 - 28.
Following positions needed, in order of priority:
Defensive Coach - Keown or Dixon?
Striker - clearly needed with RvP injury prone.
Right Back - need cover for Sagna, Eboue not good enough.
Centre Back - Vermaelen injury and Squillachi doubts.
Defensive Midfielder (only Song up to par but think Coquelin/Frimpong will be better cover than Denilson and Diaby).
Sell:
Squillachi - £1M
Eboue - £2M
Diaby - £5M
Denilson - £3M
Rosicky - £1M
Bendtner - £9M
Vela - £3M
Traore - £2M
Randall - Free
See how the following kids get on:
Ramsey
JET
Frimpong
Coquelin
Bartley
Botelho
Lansbury
Afobe

I like Rosicky, although I agree he's way out of form at the moment and is not playing to his capabilities.
He tries hard, is a total gooner, gets the ball and runs directly at the opposition every time and in my mind is way, way, way behind Diaby and Denilson in the waste of space league.
Just my opinion of course.

Thats the frustrating thing about Wenger!!! That would turn our world class team into a world class squad and we would romp the league!QuartzGooner wrote:My main thought is that we have plenty of "Squad Players".

To Louder and Zippy, no one is saying we need to spend £100m. A net spend of around £30-35m would do it and that is well within our limits. I also reckon selling those players would free up at least 300K a week on the wage bill too.
Schweinsteiger just signed a new contract, so completely irrealistic. Its Up 4 Grabs Now wrote:Are we talking realistically, or fantasy-land? Cos I’d love us to go out & buy Lahm & Schweinsteiger from Bayern but I think there's more chance of Sid having Wenger's baby.
Lahm is Bayern skipper, very unlikely to sign for us. He´d sign for Chelsea or ManUtd maybe, but not for us.

I Agree.donaldo wrote:Definatley out:

Plus:
a new midfielder if Cesc leaves (Eden Hazard for example)
a second right back (competitor for Sagna)
The problem here is the kids need time and football doesn't give you that kind of time. There are years since 2006 where literlaly one or two key absences cost us two places in the tbale and even cost us silverware in the League and maybe the cups, or the FA Cup anyway.QuartzGooner wrote:My main thought is that we have plenty of "Squad Players".

You can't have a World Class or close to it first eleven and a massive drop-off to your bench. That's why the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 team even were so good. That drop-off simply was not there. Even the 1997-1998 squad was very much the same in that regard. Even the 1998-1999 squad.
I agree wholeaheartedly with your point about veteran talent being needed now, but we can't use the first team as a player development tool any further. That's what team like West Ham do, not the Arsenal. At least that's how it used to be and we can afford it to be again.
Not crazy. Not a joke.HendrixFreire wrote:Felipe Melo? Are you fucking crazy? Is it a joke?
Cmon, you can't be serious.
Diaby, denilson, Rosicky ... the door is opened
Melo is the type of midfielder we need - guts, passion, work rate, hard tackling, presence. I'm sick of the fairies in our team, Melo would sort that out.

All of the above younger players have been developing, have been on loan this season and have done well on loan.USMartin wrote:The problem here is the kids need time and football doesn't give you that kind of time.QuartzGooner wrote:My main thought is that we have plenty of "Squad Players".

Are you suggesting they get loaned out again, to Premiership teams?
I say there comes a point where you have to play them or sell them, and yes at first they will be on a learning curve, but will be good enough for the team and will improve.
Just how Wilshere has improved during the course of this season, and how Cesc has since his debut.

I think only 3-5 major signings are needed if you get the right sorts of players.
It all startshere though - the future of Cesc.
It is not automatically doom-and-gloom if he goes, BUT that will be odwn to how much we are willing to spend of what we get for him and how we spend it.
I agree with those who suggest this team is basically built to fit suit Cesc's skills. So with Cesc gone assuming he is going why not go back to waht made us work before 2006 - a really solid 4-4-2 with a real deep-lying ball-winner protecting the back four and a box-to-box winner controlling the center of the park who can drop back deep and go forward with equal intent and effectiveness.
Why not Toulouse's Moussa Sissoko who is more of a cross between Vieira and Essien but has the pace and skill well worth a try if Abou Diaby was and look better now than Diaby did then really to boot, and Vincent Kom worth one this long, and Vincent Kompany or someone like him equally able to play in the back four or sit in front of it. Since Alex Song can do the same it gives us two solid players covering four needed positions in the team which saves some money or allows us to use it where more needed then.
After that you need one solid backup keeper which could come from Almunia or Fabianski though more likely nither of them is good enough or we can buy someone, and given unless you are looking at a Buffon or Casillas or something keppers cost relatively nothing, that's easy enough whoever you think should be working with and behind Szczesny.
To me that means we need one more striker now at least as Bendtner simply must go and go now after last night. To be a supposed top-level striker and not even geta shot off in that instance is almost criminal and there are no excuses at all any more because look at Arshavin in almost every same space and instance and how easily he managed not just the shot but the goal.
Do we need another Bendtner-type? Not really especially if go back to Wenger basics and 4-4-2 we need more of Henry type. Walcott? Can certainly be an impact sub through the middle for me or out wide even but not enough footballing brain to make the key decisions ahead of playing. I have to sit down here on this one because they aren't many with the pace, skill, finishing and creativity for his teammates that Henry had really and is essential to making our 4-4-2 work really.
Let's look right now at what we have for this
Szczesny
Sagna Djourou Vermaelen Clichy
Nasri Song Sissoko Arshavin
VanPersie Walcott
Subs to occupy bench - Wilshere, Chamakh, Koscielny, Kompany, Ramsey, New Striker, New Keeper, Gibbs, 3rd keeper(Fabianski or Shea), and add in some youngeters and maybe one more quality signing.
Of course all this depends on whether we are selling Cesc as appears possible even likely if not certain and whether we decide to go back to the old 4-4-2

We can either learn from last night or forever be dreaming of players who will never join a nearly team.
We were taught a lesson last night about how high intensity passing football can work. No team in the premiership could live with that, Barca would never let the likes of WBA, Newcastle, Orient, Ipswich etc even dream of getting a result.
If any team could replicate/match them it's us. Wenger is tactically naive but he has been shown the blueprint. So Arsenal 2011-12:
Sczeszny
Sagna, Djourou, Vermaelen, Gibbs
Song
Fabregas Wilshere
Nasri Walcott
RVP
Back Ups:
GK: ?
RB: ?
CB: Kos & Bartley
LB: Clichy
DM: Frimpong
AM: Ramsey, Lansbury, Arshavin, Emmanuel-Thomas & ?
F: 2010 Chamakh (anyone seen him?), ?
Difficult to attract a good keeper with only cup games to offer but thing be unfair to drop Szceszny now.
Need back up to Sagna, also be nice to get another CB, possibly first choice.
Frimpong deserves chance if fit to stand in for Song. Coq as extra cover.
JET has looked like he has some passion in games seen him play for Cardiff and Lansbury has good reviews from Watford and Norwich.
Theo can fill RVP role, so the early season Chamakh and AN Other to complete squad.
Sales of 1/2 keepers, Diaby, Denilson, Eboue, Rosicky, Bendtner, and Vela should make a dent in transfer fees, plus getting Squillaci wages off the bill.
So 3 or 4 players max in, supplemented by talented youngsters to see if they can sink or swim.
Sorry bit long winded!
