As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Jeffers, Stepanovs etc . Just shows that a team can win trophies without every player being a superstar, provided that the majority have got the heart and the passion.

How depressing. Look at that line up. Men, winners, fighters. Compare and contrast to the current crop of losers.

I think that the 3 comments I listed above are probably the one's that are the one's that hit this on the head the most Some fans, me included, cant help but look back and compare with the players and teams of that era but for those of us old enough to remember back before that to when we were winning fcuk all we do so while admitting that those players, no matter how shit some were, always gave their all for the club and the one thing that wasnt going to defeat them was a lack of heart and commitment[/quote]
Exactly - its not the lack of trophy's its the lack of heart, effort, commitment etc

Interesting to note that the photo includes Edu, Wiltord and Cole.
Two ran their contracts down and buggered off on free transfers, the other tried to engineer a move regardless of his contract.
So even in our most recent glory filled years that commitment still wasn't around in abundacne.

That's not the entire truth, is it Number 5
Wenger already admitted he made a mistake over letting the Edu situation get to where it did. And Wiltord wasn't exactly first choice, being played out of position so often, but still scored and played for the team.
Commitment within the season I think is mainly being refered to here.

Wenger admitted to making a mistake? I don't believe you.
Those three instances did develop during the Dein years though, where I would assume Wenger had less control over contract negotiations than he does now. So more of a collective Borg thing in letting things get out of hand.
But still in the back of my mind, did those players continue to play and give their all on the pitch for the benefit of Arsenal Football Club. Or to keep themselves in the shop window so they could get the highest price for their services elsewhere once the contract ran out?

I see what you mean, but in relation to what we have today, does it really matter? They were quality players, playing really good football which benefitted us as a team. With whom the problems of committments begin (the player or the club) is a grey area.
Take Flamini as a case where I don't think these things are straightforward. He was fucked around by the club, played at left-back, then dropped for the final of the Champions League after being as responsible as anyone else for us getting there. Then we were prepared to let him go, he puts in a good shift (which with additions to the squad might have resulted in more than it did in 07-08), and gets what he considers to be a better option - so who's letting who down?
I would prefer the commitment of someone like Flamini, than the commitment of an Eboue or Denilson in signing a 5-year contract.
I agree 100% with marc.......unlike some fans I do not expect any player to play out his whole career at our club but I do expect 100% commitment while at the club. That judas *word censored* whored himself to the chavs while still at our club so clearly he doesnt meet that standard but the other two (and I was never a wiltord fan) clearly did their best whilst at the club and edu was very unlucky to be competing with one of the best midfield pairings (PV4 and manu petit) that this club has ever had and as a result he left for 1st team football
I'm sure Dan started this thread to cheer everyone up and remind them of thier memories of that famous night, but it has invevitably turned into another moan-a-thon.
This was the greatest night I have ever had as a Gooner, and I know that it will never be beaten.
I was the last man out of Old Trafford that night, but because of that my car was a bit conspicuous by it's presence, and despite having no stickers or mini kits was obviously identified as an Arsenal car, so I had two tyres let down and 'MUFC' scratched into the passenger side door.
As it was dark, it took me more than 24 hours to notice this damage, as I merrily drove around London the following day with a smile on my face, not knowing this was on my paintwork in six inch letters!

Did he?
What was the How things change... line about then under the picture?
This indicates I am confused by your take on Dan's intentions for his thread.
Not that I am Bi-Curious.
You know what they say though, one mans moan-a-thon is another mans adult conversation.
