Connor Wickham to Sunderland

Just signed and been confirmed on the club website as £8m rising to £12m. A lot to pay but then he is meant to be an absolute top prospect who was being looked at by arsenal, spurs and liverpool amongst others, so i'm pretty fucking chuffed tbh

I do wonder why nobody else came in for him though. Especially Spurs who were heavily linked.

It does make me laugh peoples hypocricies on here. Moaning about not signing an 18 year old while moaning about Wenger signing young players.

I might be hopelessly wrong but I just think Spurs transfer strategy is, thankfully, finally coming back to bite them. Unlike any club I've ever known, Spurs seem to overspend on players, hardly use them, then expect to get their money back. Just recently, we have been quoted £10m for Peter Crouch. He went to Spurs for £10m as a 28 year old, he has hardly set the world alight there, they want rid of him but when we ask about him they say "£10m" and suggest they'd also like a deal involving Gyan. Sorry like, but hes not a first team player, hes not wanted by his club and he has fuck all resale value, why the fuck should his value still be £10m? They were the same with Hutton, the same with Pavlyuchenko, with Bent and thats just the deals we've been linked with relating to them, they'll be the same with every player linked with anyone

They dont seem to realise that if you overspend on a player and he is later surplus to requirements, you cant expect to get the whole lot back. Levy has stuck to his guns though and I think it is finally coming back to bite him- he has had no takers for Pavlyuchenko, or Hutton, or Crouch, or Bentley, or any of a number and I think they are now probably wishing they had sold some of them even at a bit of a loss to bring money in and lower the wage bill. Having missed out on the CL i think Redknapp probably needs to sell before he can think about buying and that will have stopped him being able to go for Wickham.

I think Liverpool possibly just feel they have spent enough on young English players for now and Arsenal presumably thought it wasnt a priority, especially since for either LFC or AFC he would have been far from a first choice. We've no doubt been able to sell him on the fact that we pay decent wages, he'll actually get his chance to play a fair bit for us and he will have seen Bent and Henderson and will realise that if a player wants to leave, we wont force him to stay. Sensible move by the lad and by SAFC, just hope he can continue his development because sometimes for a lad who has only been legally allowed to drink for 3 months he looks frighteningly good

That's what offering more in salary will do...

Pleased for you mate, but I'm so glad we didn't sign him. He may turn out to be a decent player but Arsenal need to be spending that kind of money and more on established players.

[newcastle mode] why nor man, wuh're a masseeve club leek and the lad knaaas that we'll be champions of europe in 2 years man woman man, wuh much bigga than liverpool man, pease pudding and stotty cake man, biggust club in tha league why aye ya bugger stotty cake man[/newcastle mode]

but no, you're right, we'll have offered him a lot more first team football and a higher wage. There is literally no other reason why anyone would choose us ahead of Liverpool and if there was I'd be worried that the lad was utterly mental. Still, its a decent little signing for us and I'm quite excited, and i know a plastic liverpool fan so i might just rip the piss out of him for it

Cheers mate, I completely agree. More than the other top clubs you really need to focus on bringing some experience in, and spending £8m on a player who, in all likelihood, you'd be loaning straight back out again, wouldnt be a great move. He's a good signing for us, we can give him some games and in a couple of seasons he should be a real asset for us, but we're not kidding ourselves, if he really does well you'll just end up signing him for £25m in 3 years time

It's like Ipswich fans taking the piss out of Norwich accents...YOU ALL SOUND THE SAME!

I think it could be a decent signing for you, but not for us. Not because he won't make it, but because another young maybe is not what we need.

Aye, dont worry mate, I know that he isnt actually joining us ahead of them just because we're such a massive club, I even think it probably isnt the great shopping experience available on Wearside or the National Glass Centre thats convinced him  He's here for the game time and the money, and that'll do me because its been a long time since SAFC managed to attract one of the more promising youngsters in the country. Typically he'll end up being shite like, but I'm still glad we got him

Could prove to be a great signing. He certainly looked the part in a few games last season. Playing regularly will improve his game too.

Very honest appraisal, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by him.

To be honest I've only been following him on the telly as we were linked with him for a long time ( and I bloody hate Ipswich - my first cup final ), but from what I saw in the highlights of the league he did seem to be a quality player.

No doubt he'll break your hearts when he decides to move on, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Time will tell lads. Bit premature to accuse our Board and manager of failing the kick out and replenishment operation. Still think he was (a little bit) of what we needed.

I won't say what I honestly think till first match.
