Last 6 season’s Arsenal cannot deal with “set playâ€Highbury_Born wrote:Good result! Blkburn well defended I rest my case!!!QuartzGooner wrote:Someone having a go at Wenger for not signing any decent defenders?
Wenger may be guilty of various faults, including failing to get the defence to organise properly, and signing some poor defenders, but failure to sign good defenders is not one of his faults.
Sylvinho, Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure, Lauren, Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker beg to differ.
What say you!

You have not made a relevant case.Highbury_Born wrote:Good result! Blkburn well defended I rest my case!!!QuartzGooner wrote:Someone having a go at Wenger for not signing any decent defenders?

Of the players I listed, only Mertesacker played at Blackburn, and he is new to the team, but an experienced international player who has proven his talent.
Our defence is poorly coached, that is my belief.
My post listed good defenders that Wenger has signed over the years.
Nothing that happened at Blackburn detracts from the list of players in my post, as only one of them currently plays for us.
Your case was that Wenger does not know how to sign good defenders, which is clearly not the case if you look at his career with us from 1996 onwards.
He has signed some bad ones, but some good ones too, listed above in bold type.
If the intention of your point is that we have a poor defence, you are correct.
But that was not the point you made in your original post to which I replied.
You asked: "So tell me; when has AW signed a world-class defender. AW lived off the back of George Graham."
That is only true for his 1998 and 2002 titles.
Our first choice 2004 Invincible defenders were Lauren, Cole, Campbell and Toure.
None of whom played under Graham at Arsenal.

I think you are getting AW confused with David Dein. My argument is not with AW it is with the Board. I believe in AW, but feel that he needs David to succeed. AW is the best Arsenal Manager to date. But since the departure of DD the team has got progressively worst in my opinion. DD & AW are the team not AW&PR.QuartzGooner wrote:You have not made a relevant case.Highbury_Born wrote:Good result! Quote from David
"I can understand their worry because the expectation level today is so high and Arsene has brought such success to the club," said Dein.
"In 15 years that he's been there every year, we've been in the Champions League. So you can understand, perhaps, fans feeling a little bit frustrated that they haven't seen a trophy for a few years.
"Under Arsene Wenger's stewardship, they've had good times and very good times and there's no reason to expect why we shouldn't see them again."

If you think that we were a better club with Dein on the board, I agree.
But Sagna, Vermaelen and Mertesaker were all signed after Dein left Arsenal.

Which of the above do you class as world-class professional footballers? Or do you believe they are all world-class?

I rate them all as defenders.
You have introduced the term "World Class".
I do not use the term "World Class" very often as I believe it to be largely a nebulous phrase, I merely said that I rated them as decent defenders.
These players all represent their international teams, with a combined total of 139 caps so far.
Sagna (2010 - 2011) and Vermaelen (2009 - 2010) have also both been included in the PFA Team of the year.

This is not about the players it's about having DD back on the board working with AW winning titles. All supporters should be pushing for it to happen instead of slagging AW.

You made a bold statement about Wenger not buying in decent defenders, so expect people to critique that statement.

I agree, a bit harsh. But I have been very upset lately like all Arsenal supporters. I am new to the forum and started the thread looking for some thought /comment on David Dein & Arsène Wenger. Then a couple of rioters started a fight.
We are at the lane in a couple of weeks; I am hoping no more embarrassing surprises. Bad enough having a couple of ex Arsenal players in their team.
