The Rooney Rule

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

It forces them to give them an opportunity to interview for it.

That cannot be a bad thing. As a white person can still end up always getting the job...

Is that meant to be intentionally racist?
Babatunde is Nigerian/French I believe so I doubt it

I would be happy for Arsenal; to interview anyone for the manager's position at the moment.

Yes. A I am card-carrying BNP member and Nick Griffin aficionado.
Me and my part Nigerian heritage. Well done Rodders on managing to find a faux racist angle from a post in which I was DEFENDING giving black managers more of a chance.

I'd even take Paul Ince.

Really mate? :?

Would you in that case also take the Merse? He's done about as much good as Ince has?

Is it not perhaps the case that players tend not to go into management until around 20 years after they first started playing and as black players only really started to get a fair showing in the top tiers in the last 10-15 years then there is going to be an inevitable increase now?

Merse would be fun! He'd tell it how it was and he could come on and show Diaby and Rosicky how to fucking dribble!

:barscarf:

(Wasn't serious about Ince but WENGER OUT! I would literally take Dalglish over him in a heartbeat)

Off the top of my head, the only previous black managers I can think off that have been given a chance have been crap.

Jean Tigana (Fulham)
John Barnes (Celtic / Tranmere)
Paul Ince (Blackburn) - Seemed to do well at the that club from MK

You can't just crowbar people into positions because of the colour of their skin it should be on merit.

Agreed.

Which is why I like this rule as it gives some people a chance at a job which they might not otherwise have been given.

Dont you think that if they were a good manager they would be considered in the first place regardless of the colour of their skin. In many cases in the NFL teams just interview a minority candidate just for the sake of it when they have no intention of hiring them and rendering the rule useless.

I do not think this issue has arisen for no reason, it has come from the PFA and there appears to be careful consideration given to mentioning it in the first place.
From what I read it seems that Black ex-players are not being considered for management interviews in proportion to the amount of black players in the playing side of the game.

If the rule was implemented then in many cases they would not get hired if the owner had an agenda, but there might be cases where they make a good impression and get hired, or get recommended for another job in football.

I agree with this. The potential upsides are greater than the, let's face it, pretty insignificant downsides.

I do however have problems with 'affirmative action' and 'positive discrimination' per se.
