mate, some things you must have in mind:
- digital zoom is as useless as igor stepanovs playing as left winger against barcelona - only pay attention to the
optical zoom
- unless you want to make prints the size of a wall, megapixels are worth shit as well - if you are intending to just share the pics on the internet and look at them on your computer, or print in normal photography papers, any camera in the market has at least twice the number of megapixels you need - you should look at other features, and mainly, asking about the lenses quality - that's where the quality of a camera lies
- if you have the time, check websites like dpreview.com or kenrockwell.com for reviews, or simply type the model of the cameras you are considering on google together with the word 'review' and read the reviews on the web. it's the best way to know if you're doing a good deal
hope you make a good deal and enjoy your pics mate!

one more thing, canon just released the S100, which means the S95 is selling at very very low prices. it's the best compact camera i've ever used, i'm considering buying myself one now:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/s95.htm
in the US they're going for less than 300 dollars, so i guess the price in the UK should be fair enough. worth a look, no doubt

well, do tell the guy behind the counter that you want that - there are specific cameras that take longer bursts and respond a lot quicker than normal cameras (quick autofocus is key for those kinds of pictures for example).

Yeah - was just throwing a number in there for an example.
My Olympus E520 was €650 (but it was pretty good value as it was a twin lense kit). But the point is still relevent; the lenses I have would be the equivilent in glass quality to a Canon or Nikon at about €800 - €900.

agreed, four thirds allows great quality with better prices and smaller sizes. it's very hard to find here in brazil though, so i had no other choice but to go canon or nikon, otherwise i'd have no technical assistance and would struggle to find accessories, lenses, etc. ended up going for a D5000, but i have some issues with it. should have gotten a D90, or now, a D7000.

Don't know if you've bought yet but if you want to do sports get a camera that doesn't have to think about it before it lets you take a picture. This will go along with the continuous shooting facility. You should also get one with a viewfinder. You can respond quicker when you've got one eye shut and you can't see everything else around you. You won't see any photographers at football matches holding their camera at arms length! The previous advice about optical zoom were spot on. Digital zoom is an irrelevance. All in all, the more you spend the better the camera and you may get a decent DSLR for your budget or consider used equipment.

throwing in my 2pence.
i take a lot of pictures and have and still make a few bob shifting them.
the first thing to bear in mind is its never the camera that makes a good photographer , the camera can only dictate the quality of image that you can take. I have the full range of equipemnt and my most profitable images are taken with a £20 camera off ebay.
that said there are two parts to dslr camera's the body and the lens. a great body with a shit lens and your wasting your money. Most dslr will come with a kit lens, most likely not the greatest but enough to get you going.
this website here is amazing. it has virtually every decent digital camera available, and you check off the ones you are looking at and can do a side by side compare.
http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/cameras
sites like flickr are awsome communities where you can learn alot about pohotography.
the camera section will tell you the most popular camera's in use by brand and overall (funnily enough its the iphone)
http://www.flickr.com/cameras/
Camera users are very cliquey, like Mac against PC types.. ( i'm a mac you pc scum.... ) anyway.... Nearly everybody will tell you that Nikon or Canon are the way to go, but be careful there are adequate alternative makes available , remember the body will do the processing so a c-mos chip type or a(something) is what you need to look for. compatbility of lens with body etc...
i use a sony alpha and it rocks.
Do your research before you ever go near a jessops or any such place as they have directed selling, ie certain models in stock to shift, some models will no longer be supported etc....
best of luck and enjoy snapping away
