Wonder what the percentages would be if the question was "Keep Wenger or win Capital One cup?"

I'm sure theres plenty out there who'd rather we'd keep Wenger than win an actual trophy. :rubchin:

I'm not even going to go into the theoretical argument about 'why' people support football clubs.

Not to worry SWL. There be a new poster on here tonight. Perhaps, if you open an account with the company, deposit £1000 and you might, MIGHT qualify for a CC final ticket, even if it is Bradford v Swansea.

The '87 Littlewoods Cup Final re-awakened the sleeping giant that was Arsenal and gave the players their first taste of success and showed that they could compete with Liverpool who were the Team at that stage !

Agreed 100%. Anyone that thinks winning an actual trophy wouldn't give the players a lift and motivate them has never played the game at any level I reckon. No better feeling than winning a stupid bit of tin, and no worse feeling than losing in a final.

I can see both sides of the argument. Wenger going can only benefit the club. But I'm a football fan and I wanna win trophies! Don't give a shit what trophies either. Start with the Tesco Lidl League Milk Cup thing and then (hopefully) progress on to better things.

Having said that, this argument came up on here back in 2007 or 2008 I think and the general view then was the players were mostly at fault for being lazy, greedy, unmotivated, not used to winning - but generally viewed as a good enough team. I think the difference now is the players are hungry, hard working and motivated but they are not as good a side as that 2008 team.

Just a thought. :rubchin:

Gave the first-team players their first taste of success. What we're talking about is essentially the players who aren't playing first team football, a couple of promising youngsters, those making up the numbers and getting confidence back.

So in my book this is apples and pears. If you think it will give a lift to the likes of Arshavin who'll probably be gone or Djourou who should be, then great. If you think it will give the club a lift and rub off on the other players who perhaps play no part in the competition (until the final which in itself seems to be a flawed concept), then great. But I think it's more complex than some are saying.

A no brainer for the long term future of the club it has to be Wenger out

In 1987 winning the league cup didnt re-awake the club it was the appointment of George who changed the whole culture of the club.We need a total change again and that aint gonna happen under Wenger.Winning the Micky Mouse cup which Liverpool won last season will not change anything and will not make our remaining good players stay

Dalglish got sacked after winning the Micky mouse so even if by some miracle Wenger wins it he should be fired. Its a trophy just above the Emirates cup

Wenger should have gone 4 year ago.For £7m a year i expect more than 4th place and a tin pot cup

Why do we have to link Wenger out with winning this cup FFS ??!!

I have said for well over a year that the guy will be staying here regardless of what happens between now and next Summer when his contract will inevitably be renewed. Do you think the League Cup with all £1m of its prize money and a spot in the Channel 5 Cup will influence Gazidis and Kroenke?

We all know its the Virtual Trophy and playing in the world's most boring Group stage that matters to them.

So for the likes of SWL Gooner, my sons, and all the other bloody Gooners who wait years to win a cup, lets just bloody win it. We are fans of the club and Wenger is staying till 2017 minimum anyway. Am I happy with that? Fuck, no. Do I want us to lose all the cups in the meantime just to prove some silly point - no.

The 1987 League Cup win that Herd mentions was the first time I saw the Gooners lift a trophy in the flesh. Still one of my fondest memories to this day - the first step towards shattering Liverpool's dominance. Now times have changed and not for one minute do I think winning this will see the start of us dominating domestic or European football, but it lifts a monkey off our back and then people can talk about other clubs going 'x' number of years without a trophy.

Enjoy the opportunities to win cups when they come around - we wait long enough

Wenger out most definitely, the time to have won this virtually meaningless cup was around 6 years ago, it would have given the club a shot in the arm, achieved a winning mentality within the team, winning it now will do none of these things except reset Wenger's trophyless run back to zero meaning the club will give him a contract extension and nothing else will change. The sooner Wenger and the board have gone the better imo.

Bloody spot on and I was there to witness Charlie net twice and Ian Rush lose when he scored for the very first time. It was massive winning this trophy. We were all out of Europe and the FA Cup and the Littlewoods Cup were huge.

Birmingham was fucking awful but for me the weight attributed to that defeat was disproportionate. Did we get knocked out to Barca because we lost to Brum? No. We lost because they were (and are) a miles miles better team than us. We were also not good enough to win the league that year, and we gave up the FA Cup as usual.

Tbh I'm not sure I believe it will really give us that much of a shot in the arm to go on and win other trophies because it's no substitute for quality, and we are seriously lacking in that department compared with our competitors. It might have been the case in 1987 but the League Cup was far more important back then, especially with the Heysel ban.

I'm far more desperate to win the Cup this time round. Partly because it will be off the back of actually showing some backbone and grit in the Reading game, partly because it's becoming more important again now with the pressure on so many clubs to win trophies and only 3/4 (Arsene jokes aside) exist, but mostly because I just want to fucking win something. It's the kind of statement that makes idiotic fans of other clubs call you a glory-hunter but they can fuck off because even ignoring how much money fans are pumping in and how much we've recouped on transfers, AFC is a club that should win trophies.

If you had told me in the Millennium Stadium 7 and a half years ago as we were mocking United for somehow managing to rob the FA Cup from under their noses and chanting "USA USA USA" after Scholes missed that 2013 would be the earliest we'd next win anything and even then we'd have a greedy American prick controlling the pursestrings I would have either punched you into the next century or tried to get you sectioned.
