I remember Grimandi having an awesome game v Palace, we won 1-0, he scored.
I ran into him that night on Upper St.
Think he was pretty much wandering up and down so Gooners could tell him he played wicked that day...

When we signed Sol he had his flaws - but in '02 we spent half the time playing with ten men
the defence was different every week, and on e of the main things holding us together was him
(on a slight side-track - didn't OGS specifically say he would back Sol
that he thought it was an accident - them mysteriously forget about it..?)

RomfordPele was mostly about hardwork but he was pretty excellent in '98
and that away performance v Bremen he actually was Pele-esque

loved Merse, but when he was sold for Overmars it was an upgrade
(as it was when Overmars was replaced with Pires)

Couldn't have cared less abut him doing that in what essentially was a meaningless exhibition game. It just seemed to amplify his "cult" status though, so great for him

Him getting sent off for a sneaky elbow at the Nou Camp that did it for me, and he should have never played for the club again after that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEGbRYhoqA4

Plus other numerous off the ball incidents, fuck ups and overall piss poor performances, the Gene Wilder lookalikey thundercunt.

He was lucky as fuck to be anywhere near a club like Arsenal, especially the great 98 & 02 teams.

In fairness to David Platt he came to us with and injury that meant 1 bad tackle and he was gone .
Without his motor and tackling ability he wasn't much and in fact people used to groan when they heard him on the team sheet.
Then he had a great game against Birmingham in the League cup and came back to near his best for a season or so but he was hardly a legend for us.

The thing is we've had a lot of players that were not great but by their application dedication and doing what was needed they excelled .

Gilberto was one of those he was the glue of the team and a man they players deferred to ,should have been made captain rather than Gallas who I never warmed to.
Sol deserves his place but that milk went sour after the West Ham at home debacle for me !
The Merse ? fuck me mans an all time legend and stands up to comparison with the best .

Me I never liked Seaman and thought he was overrated but I realise now I just hated his boat race, the ponytail and tache combo that only a Yorkshireman would consider cool .

I always thought Henry and Bergkamp weren't all that and Tony Adams also nowhere near as good as some made out.
mate that's the whole point of this thread its to say who you think wasn't as good as pretty much EVERYONE thought was!!!!

Its all about opinions some will be right most will be wrong

Only two I agree were overated are Gilberto and Lehmann.

Gilberto was an advanced version of Legohead; anything over a 5 yard pass was almost beyond him and he often pinged the fucker straight into touch 5 yards behind his intended target. Also his last season with us was appalling; his legs had mostly gone and he shambled around the pitch like a pissed up wino at times. BUT he was a great cover side to side for our roaming wingbacks and a hard worker and had an ability to steady the ship. Not a legend or a great player but a good player.

Lehmann was a good shot stopper but a fucking idiot alot of the time too. The fuck ups against the Chavs in the CL and in Paris 06 are the stand outs but there were many many similar stupid unesseccary fucking idiotic mistakes he made regularly. I'll personally never forgive him for Paris 06.

Merse is a legend for me. When you put into context the times he played in, when pitches were mostly shite, the ball was heavier, boot technology was only in its infancy, when basic assault of flair players was not just allowed unpunished but actively encouraged, then his ability, touch and skill are all the better. Fantastic footballer.

Perry and Gilles are cult legends. Particularly Gilles for stopping the Dutch Scum Dwarf from scoring what would have been the first ever goal at the new place. And that grin he gave Seamo on the way back after chopping "The Rottweiler" down to size? Quality. 8)

I actually respect that Dutchman for turning up at Berkamps do knowing and accepting the abuse he would get and duly got ! He laughed it off and took it like a man !

I hate Sherringham but the piss take he did on us in the night game @ OT the season after their treble was quality ,those that were there will know .

Your just a farking reserve !

and after Sheringham's three fingered reply:
"three games - you only played three games"

Gilberto is still playing now!
Grove season ticket holder I know whos based in Athens said he was the best player in the Greek league
He's now made over 100 appearances in Brazil (Miniero?)
personally I think he was awesome and we should have kept him

Lehman I agree with to some extent -
he was the one who started that trend of always letting in the first (and only) opposition shot
(nobly carried on by, er, all our goalies since)
but I think madJens shonkyness made me realise how good late 90's Seaman was
- and obv HE was nowhere near as good as early/mid 90's Seaman

Obv not a legend but - after the four goal game Arshavin game at Anfield I remember saying -
think he only touched it 4 times, lazy bastard. Obv was only joking at the time...

I rated both Gilberto and Lehmann  not legend status but still very good players IMO Gilberto especially. I think Gilberto is the most under-rated player of recent times deffo not over-rated

Flash, you're a mate and all, but you are the same man that posted you thought DB10's greatest goal in the history of football against the toon wasn't intended, thusly your opinion is the equivilent of Kerry Katona or Jordan's opinion on music.

My head is going to explode Sidney :banghead: Biggest act of treachery I've every witnessed on a football field that day. Mike Reilly the crooked cheating corrupt bastard. :banghead:

By the way Anders was vastly under rated.

Paolo Vernazza??? He played about three games FFS
who could possibly 'over-rate' him?

Bischoff was a Bosman punt, didn't work move on. Who cares.

John Jensen nearly killed Waddle 3 seconds into a cup final
and could never score despite being bought for hitting a cup final banger
A cult hero but literally nobody thinks he's a legend.

Helder was pretty much only considered a flop - nobody thinks he was a legend either
I met him in a nightclub loo, went to shake his hand
but he made me wash mine first. Slightly embarrassing.
(wasn't there a rumour he had huge mobster-funded gambling debts and signed for us to clear them?)

Limpar '91 one of the single best seasons by a Gooner - only person who under-rated him...
was the most important person: GG

Nige was a deserved Arsenal player of the year one season (think when we played wing-backs)
and part of the second best defence in the history of football
justified legend

Don't tell me you did so? :rubchin:   I would have told the Shalamar wannabe that given his negligible contribution in an Arsenal shirt, he was lucky I even recognised, let alone acknowledged him!! :box: Wash your hands indeed!!
