Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
This is the first update of November, we apologise for the delay in getting this to you this was due to a technical problem which is now resolved!
This Week - Training, good news and an important Save the Children Article. There is also notice of a special event being held at the Piranha Bar, Hayling Island in November.
Training: Paul reports that training is going really well despite a right forearm muscle injury, to combat this he has reduced weight on certain exercises and is continuing on as usual, those who know Paul very well, which is most of you do, will know that Paul will not give in to injury so onwards and upwards he goes. Obviously it is important to protect injuries and at any age an injury can be very debilitating, Paul is made of stern stuff but if the need arises he will rest the arm at the moment it's ice packs and strapping. I think we'll find out where we really stand when Paul starts road training as he will need to use all his arm strength to push himself up hills, in the meantime it's business as usual. ONLY 4 WEEKS UNTIL PAUL GOES ON THE ROAD.
Good News: Paul purchased his sports equipment today ready for the road etc, we again thank the anonymous sponsor for help with this.
And.....We received another £20 donation on Saturday, taking the total to £174.33.
EVENT NOTICE: Please note that the Piranha Bar on Hayling Island are holding a charity event for Save the Children on the 15th November, if you are local please try and support them as they have supported us in the past and are doing so again in April. You are guaranteed a fantastic time with some great prizes on offer and some games for you to take part in during the evening!!!
Save the Children Article this week.
Vaccination ceasefires’ needed in Syria to prevent confirmed polio outbreak turning into an epidemic, Save the Children warns.
‘Vaccination ceasefires’ are needed in Syria to prevent the current polio outbreak turning into an epidemic which threatens children across the Middle East region, Save the Children warned today. The call from the aid agency came as the World Health Organisation and the Syrian government confirmed an outbreak of polio in the eastern province of Syria, the first time the highly contagious disease has been seen in the country for 14 years.
Half a million children under the age of five in Syria are at risk of contracting the disease, which is incurable and can result in lifelong paralysis as well as death. The movement of Syrians to take refuge in neighbouring countries means that there is a high risk the virus could spread across the region.
‘Vaccination ceasefires’ would mean pauses in fighting to allow vaccination campaigns to take place across both sides of the conflict. These ceasefires, also known as days of tranquillity, have previously been carried out successfully in Afghanistan, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
‘Vaccination ceasefires’ needed in Syria to prevent confirmed polio outbreak turning into an epidemic
The World Health Organisation is currently drawing up plans to carry out vaccination campaigns but Save the Children is concerned that these may not reach all areas of Syria. The international children’s charity says it is key that the WHO-coordinated response must cover the entirety of Syria, including where necessary, across borders from neighbouring countries.
Save the Children’s chief executive Justin Forsyth said: “Polio doesn’t respect conflict lines or borders so we need these ceasefires to reach all children with vaccines, no matter where they live. If chemical weapons inspectors can be allowed access across Syria with notebooks, surely aid workers can be allowed in with vaccines.
‘The fact that an outbreak of polio has now been confirmed in Syria is another sign of the desperate and spiralling humanitarian situation there. The UN Security Council recently agreed on access for humanitarian relief across Syria. This polio crisis is a clear test of whether all sides of the conflict will respect the Security Council’s presidential statement and allow unhindered humanitarian aid.’
Save the Children has vaccinated 21,000 children against polio in Syria but wants to reach many more. They are also delivering life-saving aid to thousands across Syria and are helping hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the war in countries throughout the region.
‘Vaccination ceasefires’, also known as ‘days of tranquillity’ have historical precedence:
- Earlier this month Sudan announced a temporary cessation of hostilities between the military and rebels to carry out a polio vaccination for children under five that will reach more than 150,000 children.
- In 2001 the United Nations negotiated a week-long ceasefire in Afghanistan allowing nearly 35,000 health workers and volunteers to reach 5.7 million children under five in a countrywide polio vaccination campaign.
- In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there were days of tranquillity in 1999 and 2000 which allow 11 million children to be immunised. http://www.who.int/hac/techguidance/hbp/cease_fires/en/ Save the Children is delivering life-saving aid to thousands across Syria and is helping hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the war in countries throughout the region.
The UN estimates at least 6.8 million Syrians are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, but an NGO survey of seven governorates in northern Syria found more than 10.5 million people in needs of assistance.
More than one million children have fled Syria, over 7000 have been killed and more than two million lack access to sufficient food inside the country.

This Week - Training, Save the Children article on the latest from the Philippines.
Please take a look at the Save the Children article as it gives you an up to date insight of what has happened and what aid agencies like Save the Children are trying to achieve, we hope you can support Paul's challenge as funds are needed to restock the warehouses and it would be a great way to help raise another £25,000 plus. The just giving webpage is below.
We will ensure these donations are sent urgently to Save the Children HQ. Thank you.
Training: Training took a different path this week, Paul has changed to speed work for at least 7 days but will probably go on for longer, all is going well and the injury to his right forearm appears to have been beaten, I cease to be amazed by Paul's fight when it comes to beating negative things. Saturday and Sunday was supposed to be training with one of the crew, Alan Manning or Mr Manwaring as Paul calls him, unfortunately Alan's car has broken down and is now written off so Alan is waiting to cash in his Lotto win to by a Bentley Ha Ha. Despite this set back Paul continued with training and took a day off on Sunday, back to normal on Monday and Tuesday the switch to speed work happened on Wednesday and we are still on schedule!
News: All medical supplies, energy drinks and sports wear are sorted and have arrived thanks to two anonymous sponsors and Solicitors, Coffin Mew. All these are so important so we are glad they have arrived in time for the start of road training in two weeks time.
We also received a very kind donation last week from our friend, Christine Chambers. Thank you Christine.
EVENT NOTICE: Please don't forget to purchase your tickets for April 26th 2014, this will be a great night, with games and top raffle prizes, the food is fantastic and tickets are selling. Tickets for the event are just £22.50 each and worth every penny!
Save the Children Article this week.
A staggering £13 million has been raised so far by the DEC Philippines Typhoon Appeal, a day after it was launched - from money given online, text and phone donations. Justin Forsyth, Save the Children chief executive, said: The British public has responded magnificently to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal for the Philippines. However, there are still wide spread criticism of aid effort across the media such as ODIs Head of Humanitarian Policy stating on BBC that "the international community needs to resist the urge to be affected by the 'saviour syndrome', to come in and think they can duplicate the structures and do better without the government."
Save the Children is emptying warehouses of aid from three continents to send to the Philippines to deliver help on the ground to youngsters and their families following the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan. Cat Carter, Save the Children humanitarian officer, speaking from Tacloban, said: we have strong teams on the ground which are doing all they can in extremely difficult conditions. Aid is on the way and will be distributed as soon as possible. Media highlights include mentions by Save the Children spokespeople Krista Armstrong, Robbie McIntyre, Sara Gibson, Lynette Lim, Francine Uenuma in outlets such as Telegraph; BBC Radio Kent; BBC News Asia; Daily Express; Metro; Mail Online; USA Today; BBC Wales; S4C Wales; NBC News; PBS Newshour. Other media highlights include the op-ed by Justin Forsyth, Save the Children chief executive, in BBC News and Gareth Owen, our Humanitarian Director speaking live on BBC Radio 4s Moral Maze. Stay tune for upcoming Save the Children media features on BBC News 24, Sky News, BBC Newsround and many more.

This Week - Training, Save the Children article on the latest from the Philippines.
Save the Children - Telephone Conference 21-11-2013: On Thursday morning Paul and I were invited to become involved in a telephone conference with Save the Children on the ground at Tacloban and other places in the Philippines, we were updated on how things are really going and although we couldn't stay on the line for the whole conference we can give you a brief update on the information that we have straight from the front line.
Not all of the islands that make up the Philippines were hit by the Typhoon, which was a blessing taking in to account the tremendous devastation to the ones that were. We have been informed that one child has been orphaned but it is expected that many more will be found in the coming days/weeks, one is too many but it's a blessing that at this stage that it is only one. The Royal Navy are in the Philippines helping with the distribution of medical, water and food supplies and the evacuation of those most in need of being evacuated. All the Save the Children warehouses around the world have been emptied so they can get on with rebuilding children's and their families lives, it is envisaged that millions of pounds will still be required to help get the children and the people of the Philippines back to some kind of normality. We have been informed that the recovery programme will take at least 3 years, that's a long time for these people.
We are told that it is vitally important that donations of money are made so we can stimulate the local market places as the farmers need to buy and sell their goods to help them recover from this devastating event, for every £1 that is donated to Save the Children 85p reaches the front line while the other 15p is used to raise the next £1. Paul and the crew are trying to raise £25,000 by completing Challenge Emirates to help restock the warehouses, please help them achieve this goal by going to www.justgiving.com/ChallengeEmirates please donate as much or as little as you can. Thank you for your kind support.
Training: As you know Paul has been speed training for the past two weeks which has been a great success, he feels fitter than ever and his right forearm muscle tear has now recovered, he receives a weekly massage on the arm but this is to release the tightness and it's working well. Today (Friday) Paul changed back to gym training and enjoyed every bit of it, he will now combine speed with heavy weights next week this will prepare him for when he goes on the road in 10 days time. I can also report that Paul has lost some weight during the speed training which is important at this stage as it will help his cardiovascular circulation.
News: No additional news this week

Training: Training has now switched to the road with Paul taking things steady (NOT), On Tuesday Paul took to the road taking on hills and the flats in equal proportion but on Wednesday he decided to turn to the longest and biggest hills on one of his training routes, totalling 3 miles most of which was in the rain. He completed over 10 miles and came home with a big smile on his face and looking as though he'd just been off roading with all the road grime on his face and clothes. Thursday saw Paul complete just under 11 miles taking on several steep but smaller hills in the process, I am sure he's happy to be outdoors once again. It would be good if we could strap a small video camera/helmet cam to his chair so you to could take a few training rides with him, if there's any volunteers who would like to sponsor a cam please get in touch.
News: We have received the funds for Paul's elbow pads and will be purchasing them shortly, all thanks to the Acland family.

Last week one of our UK programmes, supporting children living below the poverty line, Eat Sleep Learn Play! (ESLP!) reached a significant milestone, giving out its 10,000th grant. ESLP! provides essential household items to vulnerable families on low incomes with young children who are going without basics. The programme has reached more than 23,000 children across the UK since its launch two years ago, in October 2011. For more information on ESLP! please visit http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/about ... learn-play

EVENT NOTICE: Please don't forget to purchase your tickets for April 26th 2014, this will be a great night, with games and top raffle prizes, the food is fantastic and tickets are selling. Tickets for the event are just £22.50 each and worth every penny!

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
WE WISH YOU ALL A PEACEFUL AND SUCCESSFUL 2014
Welcome to the first update of 2014, with just 4 months to go before the challenge.
This Week - Training, Injury.
Training: Paul has continued his training over the New Year, taking a rest on New Years Day. His injuries from the side swipe last week are still sore and there's no telling whether they will subside or not, nevertheless Paul will carry on regardless, taking rest days as planned. The weather has been warmer than past years but some days have been too windy to go out so it was either back to the gym or take a rest day, most of the time it was the gym. Just waiting for news from Barry North about picking up the recumbent on the 10th January and by the time we update you again Paul should have been out on it. We'd like to thank you all for your messages of concern about Paul's injuries and your good wishes for a recovery, I'm sure if they were too bad he would rest for a while, he says he doesn't feel any pain during training its just when he's resting and during the night.
News: Anyone who would like to donate something towards the raffle at our fundraiser on the 26th April please get in touch. Thank you.

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
This Week - Training, Injury and Challenge Gibraltar update.
Training: Paul has had a mixed week of training dealing with high winds and his injury, Monday was spent training indoors but by Tuesday Paul felt enough was enough and took the bull by the horns and went out in the horrible weather completing 25 miles and enjoying every minute of it. Wednesday Paul took on the two longest and steepest hills in his training routines and Thursday we went to Wales to pick up the recumbent from Barry North, who has kindly loaned Paul the machine for the 3rd year running, Thank you Barry. The shoulder injuries seem to be a whole lot better now that Paul has had a deep sports massage from Sarah, Paul is a lot happier when resting as there are no after training aches and pains anymore. Next week its on the cycle track for training Monday through to Thursday in the gym on Friday and on the road on Saturday, this will be the routine all the way up to the event.
News: We have to inform you that due to another event being held at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday 5th April 2014 Challenge Emirates has been switched to Sunday 6th April to make things easier for everyone, the challenge will start at 8:30am. Also things are looking better for Challenge Gibraltar, we'll have confirmation at the end of the month!

It's a very wet and blustery day here in Portsmouth, it's been much the same all week!
This Week - Training, Fundraiser and Save the Children Article.
Training: With the arrival of the recumbent chair last Thursday all training has now changed and Paul will now focus training on the recumbent for the challenge ahead. This week has seen him complete around 100 miles on the outdoor velodrome in all weathers and all has gone very well indeed. On Monday his first training session on the recumbent Paul completed 17 miles in 1 hour 25 minutes, on Tuesday he cut 2 minutes off that time so he decided that on Wednesday and Thursday he'd take the distance up to 25 miles on Wednesday he completed 25 miles in 2 hours 9 minutes and on Thursday he took 3 minutes off that time so things have been going really well. You may think that being on the velodrome is easy but it's the exact opposite, the velodrome at the Mountbatten Centre has two cambers on it at each end of the start/finish straight one large camber and one medium camber. When Paul is on the cambers he has to fight to keep the chair online he cannot go above the blue line which is in the centre of the track or his will tip over, he cannot go below the red line which is near the bottom edge of the track or he will end up on the grass. As most of you will know when cyclists race on the velodrome they stick as near to the bottom edge of the track as this is the shortest distance and fastest part of the track, on a recumbent its so different said Paul and in some instances he is fighting to keep the best line and only using his left arm/hand to steer so for these parts it's a one handed effort. Thursday was the windiest day of all so Paul was very pleased to take 3 minutes of Wednesday's time showing he is getting stronger as the days go on, usually Saturday's would be hill and road training but Paul has other things on tomorrow so its a day off, he will be back on the velodrome on Monday though and I'm sure that by the end of the week Paul will be doing 100 laps which is approximately 33.5 miles.
EVENT NOTICE:We have only sold about 29 tickets for the fundraiser on the 26th April and need to sell more quite quickly, even if you do not pay now but commit to buying tickets that will help us stage the event. We already have several great prizes, a luxury rug, a top of the range Soda Stream, a camera worth £250, the pledge of a child's bike, a top class prize from Currys and a commitment from Homebase. We also have male and female sports wear from Alexandar Sports and a small room to be decorated by a local painter/decorator. We will be sourcing more prizes before the evening and all will be top prizes just as they were last year.

The Philippines
With more than 14 million people affected by Typhoon Haiyan across nine regions of the Philippines, now further compounded by heavy rains and flooding, our response was always going to be a challenge. 4 million people still have no homes to go to, and 1,785 people are still missing. Our multi-sector response (covering shelter/non-food items, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), health, nutrition, food security and livelihoods, child protection and education) has now reached more than 260,000 people – more than 79,000 people in the last two weeks alone.
Before Christmas we launched food distributions, and we’ve recently made six mobile health teams operational, given out over 300,000 litres of safe drinking water, constructed 151 emergency latrines and created 35 child-friendly spaces, including mobile child-friendly spaces – in the form of festive jeepneys – to bring fun, games, and important hygiene messages to children in five different locations. The two jeepneys are full of drawing materials, toys, pens, basketballs and badminton rackets.

Training: Paul has been on the Velodrome all week and doing some impressive times he is now up to 35 miles and is pleased with the way things are going. The going is tough on the outdoor velodrome, Paul experiences all kinds of weather and yesterday was very breezy slowing the resulting time down. However Paul is growing much stronger on the recumbent and tomorrow he goes hill training to further enhance his strength, he'll probably complete 100 miles which he says is essential and I expect he'll be out for sometime enjoying the cruise. Yesterday after he finished his session he completed his warm down lap and was on the high camber going very slow when he decided to lean over to look at his new brake blocks and the whole recumbent tipped over "My own fault" he said, he ended up with some bruising and swelling but was in the gym training today so it can't be too bad.
News: Posters for tthe Challenge are due completion soon, if you would like any posters to place in windows please lets us know. Thank you.
EVENT NOTICE:We still have tickets left for the fundraising event on the 26th April, if we don't sell them the event will have to either postponed or cancelled which would be a great shame because we have so many fantastic prizes, the most recent are a white gold necklace and pendant worth £80 which has been donated by the Goldman in Cosham and Franks Jewellers have donated a pair of ear rings worth £45. Please support us if you can. Thank you.

Conflict in central African Republic
More than ten months after fighting erupted in the Central African Republic (CAR), the country remains beset by chaos and violence. More than 1,000 people are reported to have been killed, with 910,000 people internally displaced. As ever, children are the most vulnerable – in recent months the number of children recruited into armed groups has doubled to 6,000. Health infrastructure is in disarray, with only seven surgeons in a country of 4.6 million people, and more than 1 million people are in need of food assistance.
Save the Children has been on the ground in CAR since April last year, and we’re continuing to grow our programme to do more for children. So far we have reached more than 59,000 people through our child protection, health and nutrition work. Having joined forces with Merlin, who have been in CAR since 2007, we’re in a particularly strong position to offer frontline healthcare. Since the beginning of the year we have treated more than 1,400 children in our mobile health clinics in Nana-Gribizi and Ouaka, while also successfully reuniting 44 children with their families in Bangui camps.

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
This Week - Training, Weather and Fundraiser.
A long week of rain, wind and hard work.
Our thoughts are with those who have been severely affected by the floods both directly or indirectly.
The Fundraiser is at risk of being postponed/ cancelled, can you help?
Training: The weather has never let up this week the wind has been so strong it was too dangerous for Paul to venture out on to the Velodrome and the roads, Tuesday and Wednesday was gym work and the usual day in the gym on Friday. Monday saw Paul take to the track he also got out there on Thursday the wind threatened to turn him over even though it was the quietest day of the week. Friday saw another storm over the south of the UK and by then Paul had broken, he decided to take on the wind and hills today (Saturday) enjoyed every minute of it even though again he nearly got blown over by the wind twice. We are a little behind on training as you can imagine and there's no catching up on lost days but Paul will increase the intensity to ensure he's ready for the 6th April at the Emirates Stadium.
Notice: We now have the promotional posters for the challenge and the fundraiser, if anyone would like some to put up around your area please let us know and we'll give you some. Thanks to David Hoyle for designing the posters again, David has supported all our challenges. Thanks to Save the Children for printing them off for us.
EVENT NOTICE:As you are aware we are approaching the fundraising event quickly we need to sell at least another 32 tickets to make this event work, tickets are only £22.50 with and excellent buffet and a great live act. To remind you the event is being held at the Piranha Bar, Sparkes Marina, Hayling Island, start is 7pm prompt til late. There are a number of games for everyone to join in and have tremendous fun and some fantastic raffle prizes two of which are a camera worth £250 and a white gold necklace with pendant worth £80, no prize is worth less than £25. to book your tickets please contact us via this email address before March 15th 2014. Thank you for your kind support.
Save the Children Article this week.
Update from the Philippines, 3 months on..
On 8 November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan left a trail of destruction through the Philippines that would affect nearly 6 million children, destroy 500,000 homes and cost more than 6,000 people their lives.
Three months later, our response has made a huge and positive difference for communities hit by the storm. We’ve raised over £30,000,000 and reached more than 300,000 people, including more than 110,000 children.
Our team has expanded to over 340 staff, with field bases in three of the worst-affected areas: Tacloban, Ormoc, and Estancia. Since the typhoon hit they have:
· delivered more than 25,000 household kits containing basics like kitchen utensils and jerry cans
· distributed tools and materials to help people rebuild their homes
· together with Merlin, provided over 9,000 consultations in mobile health clinics
· set up 39 temporary learning spaces and 46 child-friendly spaces
· reached more than 200,000 people with essential food supplies
· delivered 400,000 litres of clean drinking water
· supplied fishermen with cash transfers to buy materials to rebuild their boats and their livelihoods.
Throughout our response, finding innovative ways to reach affected communities has been key. Our Save the Children boat travels daily to islands off the coast of Panay, carrying out a range of activities with people in remote areas such as hygiene promotion, cooking demonstrations, health screening and psychosocial support.
Save the Children works in 120 countries. We save children’s lives. We fight for their rights. We help them fulfil their potential.

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
Now just 4 weeks until Challenge Emirates.
This Week - Training, Weather, Fundraiser Tickets.
Training: The weather has improved a lot since writing last week's update and Paul is bringing down times but they are unimportant really as we cannot compare the velodrome or road training to the Emirates the Emirates podium is much flatter than what Paul is training on so we all anticipate that times will be quicker there if the weather stays calm. With the wind much lighter this week Paul is working harder and training is much more intense as there are only 3.5 weeks of training left before the big day. Sponsor logos and supporters names have been sent to Pentagon Commercials to be printed on the side of the van ready for pick on the 4th April and ready for our journey to the Emirates on the 6th.
Back to training, a lot of strain is being put on Paul's arms and wrists now, there is a slight strain on the left wrist which is the weaker of the two but Paul is working through that and all is ok for now!
EVENT NOTICE:
Fundraiser to go ahead after ticket sales increase dramatically. As you are aware we are approaching the fundraising event quickly we need to sell at least another 32 tickets to make this event work, tickets are only £22.50 with and excellent buffet and a great live act. To remind you the event is being held at the Piranha Bar, Sparkes Marina, Hayling Island, start is 7pm prompt til late. Thank you for your kind support.
Notice: Donations a quite low this year as of yet we haven't made it to the £1,000 so if you think you can donate a small amount please feel free to do so, you can do this by going to the just giving website below or by seeing Paul and handing him your donations. Thank you for your kind support!!

Re: [Charity] - Paul Smith (In Wheelchair)
I apologise for getting the schedule wrong last week my mind was elsewhere and I inadvertently said there was 4 weeks to go until the challenge in fact there are only 2 weeks and 3 days.
This Week - Training, Fundraiser Tickets are a success and support from Save the Children Volunteers is overwhelming!
Training: A mixture of warm and wet weather this week saw Paul increase the pressure on himself as we near the end of training and go into the challenge on the 6th April. Paul is really increasing the intensity before he begins to wind down ready for the big day, he has been going against the clock and completed 210 laps of the velodrome on Monday with a very good time, so he's pleased with what is happening at the moment and all seems to be coming together just in time for the big day. The recumbent is working fine, thanks to Tom at Solent Cycles and theres no further hiccups with bearings and the like. All we are hoping for in terms of weather is a warm overcast day with no wind or a very, very light breeze so Paul doesn't over heat, anything more and it will make things very difficult for him.
Thank You: A big thank you must go to the Save the Children volunteers who are currently going out around London promoting the challenge we have never known such kind support in all the challenges we have done and we have received some great support in the past. Please support these people and their efforts and please support Paul in his quest to raise £25,000 for children in the UK and around the world who desperately need our help. Thank you.
EVENT NOTICE:
Tickets for the fundraiser continue to sell well, there are only 8 tickets left so please get in touch if you want a great night out whilst in the process helping sick and vulnerable children at Great Ormond Street and around the world.
Notice: If anyone would like to donate to the raising of funds and help Paul reach the £25,000 target for this great cause please visit the Just Giving webpage below or contact us if you wish to send a cheque. Thank you for your kind support!!
