As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.
Rugby Gooner wrote:I went to the Martin Keown testimonial just after the Invincible Season. It was a cracking sultry September evening. Wrighty played, and swapped his shirt with a lad in the crowd, Beckham defied his Real Madrid "orders" to just kick off them come off until they were about to come on the pitch and drag him off,(he was replaced by Gazza). I still have the programme somewhere, good days!!!
Ha, the reason it was so sultry was because it was actually May 17 - just two days after we'd beaten Leicester to complete the unbeaten season. Probably my favourite testimonial of the lot, because it was really just a continuation of the celebrations from the weekend (the bus parade was on the Sunday, making it a full three days of celebrating).
Good game too, as you say, which we won 6-0. When I met Keown at a signing in 2012, I had him sign my programme, and we had a quick chat about it all. Which was nice.

I was close! I am not a "Train spotter" when it comes to dates etc, but myself and the mate that I went with were reminiscing about that game a couple of nights ago, and both agreed it was a great evening.
I miss a good testimonial. I didn't go to keowns. Best has to be Merson's 8-6 I think the score was. Both gazza and glenn hoddle donning the glorious redand white. Strangely, cannot find a picture of hoddle wearing an arsenal shirt I'm sure there was one in a match day programme, To add since DB10 have you noticed that arsenal have a habit of selling players in their 8th/9th season at the club since we moved to the Grove? I'd go to Abou's as surely it would be the only time we get to see him on the pitch. I bet we sell Theo next season as his will be due in 2016.
Still cant believe how Dixon got Real Madrids galaticos and Adams got palace and then celtic???
If wenger ever has one the opponents could be all the managers the spuds have had since '96.
There was a reason behind Adams getting Palarse and it all revolves around Tonys Dad who took charge of the whole debacle.
The Club had suggested that it was held late in the season since Arsenal were involved in the Makita for which they had just sold the tickets plus people had just paid for their season tickets.
Adams Dad would have none of it and so with 2 weeks notice we end up with Palace in Mid August .
I took both sons and remember being gutted and shamed by the poor turnout but a lot of blame has to lay on his dads shoulders.

I remember reading that Adams was so disappointed by the turnout for his first game that he considered his future at the club. But a lot of the blame lay at his feet , or more accurately his father's. Modern players get a testimonial payout every week.
Best Testimonial moment for me was after Wrighty stole the show at Dixon's, Dicko said, "Well, it was a pleasure to be here at Ian Wright's testimonial!".
I'll never forget Bergkamp's testimonial. I had heard lots about the legend that was Cruyff but was too young to see him play. When he came on for a short cameo it was a box ticked for me. Even though he was not that mobile you could see that the touch and the vision was still there. What a pleasure to witness!

Yeah, I remember thinking he can still pass a ball onto a six pence from 100 yards. As a kid in the mid to late 70's I saw him play on TV a bit and he was just incredible. No hype, just pure genius.

they used to be a mark of recognistion - i remember David O'Leary's like yesterday.
lower level clubs still have them, for the reasons mentioned above - it is to help fund the players retirement - Peter Osgood bought a Pub in Windsor, Steve Perryman bought a sports store in Hayes (and Norway oddly).
with todays wages the money is not needed- but the recognition should be, but to be honest, most of our players have been robbing us for the last 10 years so i wouldn't go unless it was for a very good cause like Bob Wilson's Willow Foundation or Rocky's.
I remember O'Leary's,didnt his brother play? I remember Celtic being murder all night in the streets and Clock End
Massive Celtic support at that game i seem to remember. They pretty much took over Highbury but then considering how many Irish were living in North London at the time, that wasn't hard.
Always remember the fuckers burning the Union Jack in the Clock End.
For me the absolute ultimate best testimonial moment ever was during DB10's testimonial when The Grimster chopped down ex-scum Davids to stop an ex-scummer being the first person to score at The Conglomerates and thus curse the place for 350 years.
Okay, it didn't quite stop the curse, but his intentions were honourable!

Yeah I remember that - the whole place pissed themselves laughing and grimandi was beaming like the cat who had just got the cream
Testamonials at our level should def be a thing of the past - I know that the likelihood is that the money would go to charity, but I would rather that they hold a charity collection at a league game than asking fans to pony up to watch the equivalent of a kids kickabout at training
Wenker will get one without doubt - given the man earns 8m per season from us and still does nixer's for French tv, how many of you would expect him to give the money to charity ? Although I suppose there is a possibility that he could give it to the same African charity that allowed him to adopt eboue and the bus loving Togolese c.unt

When The Grimster and Seamo were walking back past each other The Grimster gave Seamo one of the best Gallic shrugs I've ever seen, it was a figurative "Eh! Fuck Davids, huh?!"
