Jimmy Greaves

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I remember at the time when Charlton got the ball outside the box , there was a rise of anticipation noise in the crowd . When Greaves got it the crowd went silent . His finishing was deadly.

I remember watching a documentary on Jimmy when he was fighting the demon drink.

It opened with him sitting on a park bench and saying "My name is Jimmy Greaves and I'm an alcoholic."

He went on to say that he sometimes would wake up on a park bench. He would look at his watch. It might say half past six. He wouldn't know if it was morning or evening. So he would find the nearest pub. If it was closed then it was morning. If it was open then it was evening, and he would go in for a drink.

I thought at the time that Jimmy was very brave to do that programme. And my respect for him has never faded.

When I was a kid playing sunday afternoon on Regents Park Jimmy would always join in our 'coats down' games if he was passing. Imagine players doing that these days !!. Remember a great goal he scored for Scum with a magic volley scissor kick. I think I had a photo of that on my bedroom wall for a while. Decent bloke & great player - get well soon Greavsy. :barscarf: :barscarf:

Think you got that wrong mate

He was totally gutted and in a big mood at the final, my brother spoke to him at the time....he was number one before Ramsey dropped him

One of the best was Bobby Moore a true gent real class guy, always had time for people and a wonderful charming guy, met him on holiday once really just as you would think, Top man
