I was brought up in a society that confused me ,Policemen and all authority figures were white.
Everyday racism was normal , even school teachers were racist until I moved to Kent and then there simply were no black people but the very few Asian were scandalously abused but not in my school as it was 100 pct white so I didn’t see any .
It confused me that white people were happy to imitate and dance to black music ,but not happy to mix with them .
Football at Arsenal always had loads of Black faces off the pitch and gradually some on it .
I've never heard anyone getting abused for bieng Irish at Arsenal as there were scores of Irish - English in the region and many of the pubs were Irish , as much and perhaps even more than in Kilburn, in Holloway/Archway/Kentish town were massively Irish ,still are but I accepted that it existed .
I hate the thought of a white v blacks football game its segregation !
E2 where I grew up already had a big Caribbean influx when I was a kid,the old Jamaican boys were good as gold, but I do remember my old man gave them some stick which they took in good humour, always laughing at his shit jokes, humouring the silly old bastard, just the Alf Garnet type of stuff that I'd seen on TV.It was a melting pot of great music and people,( where I first heard Ska and Reggae, which I love to this day) I dont think we noticed the racism then, maybe it was just kind of accepted in 1970's England? it was just my mates, some of which were white, some of which were black and one we had who was Turkish,I even had a mate who supported the scum.My uncle John was a huge Irishman so that was the norm for me being around his Irish family,I must admit I dont remember many black faces at Highbury but many Irish accents,
I too moved to Kent about 1982 and the abuse I heard towards the Indians was crazy,my school was about 3 quarters white and a quarter Indians,I'd never really seen an Indian til I moved out of London.
