Could have been a great player under the right manager, but sadly was screwed over by the senile french cock - I was there the day he was outstanding against the red manc scum only to be subbed midway through the second half much to the vocal frustration of the fans, and even van persie shook his head at the decision  The ox was a right winger in a 4-4-2 system, but as soon as teams started going to 4-3-3 he was screwed cos it didnt suit him at all

I remember that being the first time that the crowd really turned on Wanker. Up to that point, we'd had a few moans and groans when a player was taken off that was playing well and one of this fucking favourites got brought on to replace him but that days was the first noticeable boos and the first "You don't know what you're doing chants". Then we had another six or seven years or the fucking twat destroying everything around him.

The fact he went elsewhere were and didn’t set the world alight, suggests he may have peaked. Injuries or not,

Peter Simpson, closely followed by Geordie Armstrong. How those two never got an England cap was criminal, considering the way they are handed out like confetti these days.

spot on Bob.....Geordie never getting an international cap was totally baffling.......as for Peter Simpson yes along with Peter Storey also great players....then they had Frank McLintock alongside marshalling a pretty formidable defence.....

Peter Simpson when he left Arsenal had no interest in Football and has never returned to Highbury or the Emirates....

He also had some attitude, confidence and work ethic problems.

Remember seeing cringe interviews of him and his sponging mates (sorry, his crew  ) sitting around talking about the hairstyling parties they would have almost every night of the week.

Whilst that is not illegal (before the devil's advocate brigade on here start fucking whining  ) it indicated he was more about his image and comfy lifestyle, rather than breaking his balls to be the best player he could be.

Saw his dad in a clip telling him he had to work and train harder. Also recall (I think) Pat Rice saying he needed to work harder in training. And Wenger saying his self confidence was very low.

So whilst Wenger was probably zero help to him, I think Chamberpot also needs to take some responsibility for the mediocre career he ended up having. A shame really as he had potential.

Not disagreeing with any of that DB10, but would you not agree that his "skill set" was not suited to the 4-3-3 system, and that as much as anything killed his career ?

I can see the point(s), you're both making, but playing under Wenger, unless you were a favourite, was enough to kill anyone's confidence and work ethic. Imagine being the young Chamberlain, looking seriously good and bags of potential, but Theo is always ahead of you on the right wing, or even prats like Ramsey stuck out there.

I'll always remember the CL game at home to Milan, following our 4-0 loss at their place in the first leg. We were brilliant in the first half of the second leg with both RVP and Chamberlain on fire. We were 3-0 up at half time and then in typical Wenger fashion, hardly registered an effort in the 2nd half and went out with a whimper.

Anyway, that evening saw Chamberlain actually playing the right side of centre mid and he was brilliant. I think it was his breakthrough season, the same one where the Old Fraud stupidly subbed him against Utd. Despite his first half performance in that more central position, I don't think Wenger ever played him there again.

I genuinely thought we'd found a star with AOC and that Wenger's mismanagement ruined him He was neither the first nor last that it would happen to.

It's not mutually exclusive augster. My point is it wasn't just Wenger that fucked his career, he was partly responsible too. Even when he went to the victims* they seemed to not know where his most effective position was and he was as inconsistent there as he was with us. I don't think we can blame two managers because he didn't hit the heights.....

I seem to recall though Retro he had a few chances to play in his favoured position and he was inconsistent. Amazing one game, a bit shit the next. Even during games he could start brilliantly and then just drift out of it. Same at the victims*.

I think he was just another in the long list of young players that had potential but didn't have it in them to become world class. I don't think Wenger was blameless in it, but equally I don't think we can say it was all Wenger's fault.

I believe the true best players that have it within them to become world class, do so, no matter who the manager is. He got his move to the victims* and he didn't go on to be top class there either.

Completely agree about Ray Parlour. Not sure he's underrated though - after all, we all know what Posh Spice felt about him....

Not sure he qualifies as underrated, but during that same period in the 2000s when Ingerland supposed had so many legendary centre backs (Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell, Carragher etc), Keown had a couple of years where he was the absolute pick of the bunch for me from around 1999-2002. Hard as nails and lightning quick. On form, he was the best centre-half in the country, but was never as fashionable as any of the other lot.

We certainly rated him, but he never got the full recognition he deserved.

I was a regular during the early eighties, but it wasn't until I watched the Big Match revisited series that I appreciated just how good Alan Sunderland was.
