Very difficult to have any sympathy for the buffoon. His problems are largely of his own making. I know it goes against the grain in today's culture of "everything bad that's happened to me can't be my fault", but you don't necessarily have to have a mental illness or inner demons to be an alcoholic wife beater. You can just be a bit of twat.
And don't believe anyone who tells you he was the greatest English player of his generation either. I remember him as overweight, pissed and constantly at risk of getting himself sent off or injured, or maiming someone else. It's perhaps fitting that he played for clubs with some of the most charmless supporters in football. Tottenham, Rangers and Lazio.

Cheers mate. Wasn't having a pop at your opinions by the way. I've just never been keen on Gascoigne. Like you say though, it's never pretty seeing anyone in that state.goonerk wrote:fair points. i hope you're right. just always sad to see someone deteriorate like he has.exiled in notts wrote:Very difficult to have any sympathy for the buffoon. Has he got a kid? If he does, that's the one I feel sorry for.
Further to the alcoholic points made earlier; I have a Gooner mate who is a full blown alco. He's a great bloke when sober (intelligent, witty and great fun) but a total waste of space when he is out of it (which is more and more often these days). I love the guy but no one can help him, he is psychologically and physically addicted to alcohol at a genetic level. In his case it is a disease and it will kill him.
If Gazza has that illness then it ain't his fault and I would have sympathy, but there are many people with obsessive personalities that could beat the booze but are (as Exiled said) just selfish twats. I get the feeling Gazza is one of the latter. I could be wrong but that is my feeling.
As for the infamous time he played the imaginary flute to the Celtic fans, he was set up by his Rangers team mates. They told him it was a mark of respect to Celtic, that it would get the Celtic fans on side and he'd get a bit less abuse if he did it...
