NEVER AGAIN TO CARDIFF I GO

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

[quote="lisa_gooner"]I spent a fuckin fortune on flights and hotels because I wanted to leave at least a 24 buffer on each side of the match. There really is no excuse for assuming you can swan onto a train and waltz into a major sporting event with 10 mins to go!

SWAN ONTO A TRAIN !!!!! I GAVE IT 6HRS 30 MINS TO GET TO CARDIFF ON A TRIP THAT TAKES 2HRS 30 MINS I SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN CARDIFF AT 11AM NOT 3.15 PM SO PLEASE LISA THINK B4 YOU TYPE I HAVE BEEN TO MANY FINALS OVER MY 41 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER GOT IN LATE OR JUST SWANNED ( IS THAT A WORD ? ) INTO ANY MAJOR SPORTING EVENT. I WHEN TO HOLLAND FOR THE PSV GAME AND HAD NO SUCH TROUBLE EVEN WITH HAVING TO GET A TRAIN INTO EINDHOVEN AND HAVE ALSO SPEND A FCUKING FORTUNE GOING TO WATCH ARSENAL AT CARDIFF AGAINST LIVERPOOL CHELSEA SOUTHAMPTON BLACKBURN MAN U CHELSEA AND CHELSEA AGAIN AS HAVE MANY GOONERS SO DONT GET ON YOUR HIGH HORSE AND MAKE STUPID REMARKS [/b]

get over it.
Paris last year - Got the ferry fine. had about 30 minutes to get to the train station in calais, got there in 29 minutes 30 seconds then realised it was the wrong station. Had to pay a heap of money to change the tickets for a train from that station. then had to get a slow train to lille. Wait in lille for an hour and a half then get a slow train to paris.
Lost the match
had no hotel to stay in so slept in the lobby of one some friends were staying in, before being kicked out by the hotel security. Was found by a mte who let me stay on the floor of his room.
Woke up early next morning and tried to call my friend but she wasn't answering her phone. waited 2 hours before she finally woke up. she came and met me and we headed back to the station (1 hour late). got lost. got to the station and had to pay out another heap of money for a new train ticket. got told after i paid that the train leaves in 8 seconds. had to run to the very end of the station (with a ragin hangover). got the train (slow one to lille) had to change and wait an hour for the slow train to calais. got there, ran the whole way to the port and missed the ferry by 5 minutes. had to wait two hours for the next one. finally got back to dover and drove home. Got in at 10pm (about 12 hours later)

Here's the funny thing though, we never even had match tickets. Just went over for the crack and to watch it in a bar.
Despite it being the worst travel experience I ever had, I would do it again in a second. just be grateful you had a ticket and got to the match. a few extra hours travelling doesnt matter.

PS
As someone who visits friends in Cardiff fairly regularly let me tell you that standing the entire journey from Cardiff to London on a Sunday evening can be expected any weekend of the year, not just on a cup final weekend.

In 1995, I'd messed up badly and found that our CWC Final in Paris coincided with a family visit to Dublin. Not only that, but Arsenal had sold out their allocation and I hadn't been lucky. That should have been the end of it (my wife certainly thought so!!).... But then Arsenal received some additional tickets, so I caught a coach down to London and slept out in front of the North Bank turnstiles with 100's of other Gooners to be 1st in line the next day. I then found that air fares direct from Ireland were through the roof so..... caught a flight back from Dublin to Stansted, train into Victoria and coach to Paris - and then did the whole thing in reverse the following day - after having the pleasure of seeing Nayim lob Seaman in the last minute. The point of the story is..... don't expect everything on a plate! Sure, Cardiff is a crap place to get to but, hey.... it was a fecking cup final !!! Athens won't be an easy place to get to either, but I'd walk there backwards if I thought I had half a chance of getting a ticket!!!

Arrived Paddington ~ 8am from 2nd train that left my local station (1st one being slightly slower so not much difference) got on a train 10.15am which left about 15mins later. Stuck at Newport for an hour an half arrived Cardiff Central 2pm.

Afterwards what with the mayhem on the pitch thought it might all kick-off at the station and did the usual thing of hang about a bit to let the queues die down which in the past has been fine. Arrived Cardiff station 7pm amongst loads of Chelsea supporters got on train at 8.45pm (all that time queuing outside the station) which I think left at 9pm still at Newport 10pm arrived back Paddington 12.20am £45 taxi fare home. The worst was that the crowd control and police didn't have a clue what was going on. It all got a bit heated at the front of the other queue with people pushing.

Suppose you have to put it in context as well. Imagine a long time Leeds or Sheff Wed (or even Spuds for that matter!) fan hearing us moaning about what an awful trip it was going down to see our xxxth cup final of the last 10 years.... imagine you were returning from a midweek stuffing in Hartlepool!

Stick to the coaches lads, we left Arsenal at 7.20am, arrived about 10.30am. On the way home we left at 6.00pm and got back at around 10, the coach has a bog on it, which comes in handy after 10 pints!!. Only £25 aswell. Shit hot day, shit result. Outplayed them, outsung them.
