Arsenal could have afforded Torres (21/3)

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Would love to win it this season and if we had Torres then we might be in a better position. Remember Leeds though, when you start spending you have to suceed, if three years ago we had gone mad in the transfer market then has two years of 4th place we could have been in serious trouble.

Don't forget Arsene has always said next season will be when we reach our potential. Provided we keep Flamster and improve in a couple of areas then next season we will be awesome.

We need to remember that the prem is so competitive, this is not scotland, winning is great but it needs to be sustainable
We are in a different situation to Leeds. I agree that if we done that three years ago when we didn't have much transfer funds, we might have been in trouble. But now, we are in a different situation altogether. We have 70 million according to many reliable sources, not such as The Sun, but such as our board members and Arsene himself. We are in situation like Barcelona where we can spend money to strengthen out team without any consequences. And it is clear, we could do with some signings.
We are in a different situation to Leeds and that is the point. We have for the last three seasons been told there is transfer money available but Arsene has said we 'can't afford' the players. The fact we have so much money is a testament to us controlling our wage bill, which as I said at the start of this tread is why we can't afford players like Torres. If we start paying massive wages for these so called great players then the alleged £70m would not be avaialble because we would be struggling or adding to massive debts ala Manure. Clichy or cashley, gallas or fedinand, flamster or hargreves...all these players in my opinion (and the list could go on) are better but they have not inflated our wage bill.
