Firstly the centre of our defence remains as weak as ever - witness the goals conceeded at Fulham which lost us 3 points and against Bolton that eventually didn't - but was an inept piece of defending all the same.androyd wrote:Just a post to wonder what the 'doom and gloom' merchants of a couple of weeks ago think of Arsene Wenger now? Should he have splashed the cash like Spuds or spent 30 million on a hard working top notch player like Berbatov (didn't he shine against Chelski?). Well the collective sum of their points is less than ours. Feeling slightly more 'rose-tinted' now? Perhaps Wenger isn't an idiot after all? Or am I wrong? I said we should judge the team after these three games and whilst at Kiev we suffered from not taking chances we went to two grounds that have caused us problems and did the business, the second after a long european trip which usually results in a poor performance. Are Song and Eboue not up to the job? Theo just not good enough? You tell me.
Wenger himself - correctly ! - at the end of last season said we conceeded 10 more goals than Chelsea or Man U often through long balls being played down the middle of our defence or from free kicks and conrners.
Therefore addressing that was a closed season prioity. He was not wrong and this season will show that up AGAIN.
I would have thought taking Wenger at his word was just what the 'Arsene knows' brigade would call for themselves ? The fact that Wenger has failed to act on his own analysis is simply astonishing. But it's a done deal now.
When we ship out Diara, Gilberto, Hleb and Flamini - that's half our midfield from last season - and bring in Nasri and Ramsey as replacements, is it truly a 'headless chicken of a fan' who suggests we are further diluting an already understrength squad by not getting in the extra player(s) needed ?
We've had five games and two excellent away wins on hostile grounds where we have failed before. But before we start blowing the trumphet of title winning victory let's wait until April and May shall we ?
Two further things may just yield in Wenger's favour. One is that the injury list make lighten as the season progresses - rather than increase -as Eduardo and possibly Diaby both return - although I've almost given up on Rosicky.
And Wenger might just act to strengthen the squad in January (Miguel Veloso ?

Eboue is indeed playing better and no one suggested we needed or would sign Berbatov but only a blind man would deny his qualities particularly when he's being fed by Rooney, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs, Tevez and Carrick.
Still no trophies since Pat left !
So before we get too carried away, let's just see how the season pans out.
