THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

who knows what Arsene has tried in the summer? That is part of the problem with discussing transfers, we only know of those that succeed and sometimes of those denied by work permit.

So then why has he failed to secure players?

We used to be in a position where players would walk over broken glass to join our club.......and I mean world class players not kids from Cardiff!

They still want to play for us they just want to paid top whack as well - which they used to be under the tax loophole that Arsenal took advantage of to have so many high earners on the wage bill and at the same time appear to maintain a wage structure.

So you know nobody refused us back then? I doubt it.

Clubs not selling would be a problem, battling with other clubs, people not wanting to go to London or England, work permits, a player we are interested in getting injured, refusing to be held hostage to ridiculous fee's. Look how complicated Nasri's transfer became!

Everything with us appears to be complicated and we can guess and make up as many excuses as we like but the facts are we have allowed ourselves to be weakened by not ensuring he players we need NOW are still over the horizon!

That's a comment that needs to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

For a large part of my Arsenal supporting life we've been blown out by so many high profile players because of our wage structure you could have called us FC Windsock.

And that dates back to the Graham era, it's not a recent thing.

I am sorry but my statement stands true.

Yes, we have had knock backs because of our wage structure but four or five years ago we was still securing the quality of player we crave for DESPITE it!

Quality young players that most of us had never heard of for the most part or those with huge baggage or question marks over health and fitness.

The thing about your 'problem' theory magic is this: why can so many other clubs get in so many players? (Often, if we use your approach of unseen dealings, ahead of us...)

Sunderland is a recent case in point. Not exactly a world class side, but they're getting in a fair number of players who will be exactly what the club needs.

Everton? Newcastle?

Sunderland are doing brilliantly at bringing in players but are any of those players we would want? They have a wider target as they can be less fussy over quality and only this week managed to bring in strikers. Plus half of them are from their feeder club Spurs

Wenger on Arsenal.com:

"Buying is not always the solution."

Hate to say it, but I think we've had our 'one signing before Twente'.

There was an atmosphere in the stands on Saturday that I've not seen before, gooners arguing with each other (saw a couple of fights nearly kick off); anger, real anger from lots of people aimed in lots of different directions (players mainly) and towards the end support beginning to wane (even saw people leaving early).

This isn't good for the team or Wenger, if performances like Fulham continue I can see some of the frustrations turn towards Wenger on matchday (rather than just online, which doesn't really count does it.)

I think no way sack Wenger ..... he has to be allowed to proved most of us wrong first

I'll see what we do this year - if we dont win anything BUT show the youngsters are becoming real class ( and we DONT sell or LOSE anyone on a free like RVP) then I'll give him next year too

but if we do CAK and the youngsters dont repay the confidence in Wenger then I hold him responsible

This is his most CHALLENGING SEASON YET - but cant help thinking its his own making

god bless arsenal and all who sail in her
