Saving it all up for next year. I will be travelling to the Emerald Isle to assist in celebrating my mates 40th. Apparently the lovely Irish ladies have had enough of having to provide ladders for their fellas to slip them a length, so they sent a message over the water to us.

Back to the movies!

The last Die Hard film (or "fillum" as we say in Dublin! ) was so fucking shit, I was stunned. I loved Die Hard 1 and 2, quite enjoyed 3, was a bit meh about 4, but that last one? So fucking lame, predictable, cliched and dull. Time to hang up the vest, Bruce. :(

That last film is so old you must have watched it on tv you mean fucker :D

12 years as a slave 6/10. It is like an episode of Roots
American Hustle 6/10. Over rated, not a patch on The Sting.
The last survivor 9/10. Superb war film.

Is the Last Survivor about a Navy SEAL whose team gets whiped out in Afghanistan and he is sheltered from the Taliban by Afghans because of their strict code of hospitality to strangers? If so, I read the book of it "Lone Survivor" by the SEAL himsel, Marcus Luttrell. One of the best non-fiction books I've ever read. Superb. One of the SEALs sacrificed his own life to go out into the open in an effort to get a radio signal to call in support. The description of the intitial battle up and down the mountain against dozens of Taliban is stunning, visceral combat writing at its best. 8)

Watched Die Bored 5 on Sky+ on demand... bit lazy when it comes to the cinema nowdays, Barry.... :D

Watched the second Hobbit film - 6/10.

Obviously greedy to milk 3 lengthy films out of one book that is far shorter than the Lord of the Rings and tbh it shows in the film. The last hour or so dragged out and could have been compressed into 20 minutes. Think the film massively suffered from not having such a clear 'quest' running through like LOTR and not being able to maintain multiple concurrent storylines very well. Too one-track.

Not a bad film really but stack it up against the LOTR films and even the first Hobbit film and it falls well short.

Mandela (Long walk To Freedom)

Image

Excellent film, yes there are flaws, but to try and encapsulate his book/biography in 2.5 hours was always going to be a huge ask.

Incredibly emotional - what the White South African Government did to The black people and what they did to Mandela is well documented, but this film really puts it there right in front of you....I am in awe (was before but this really brings it home) at how he was able to forgive them.....don't be surprised if you shed a tear or three.

Idris Elba whom I like as an actor is excellent.

9.5/10
