Dan Smith: I'm FED UP with being the man who crocked Abou Diaby
"I think about what might have happened to my career if it were not for that tackle, probably every day."
"From there I was the guy who broke Diaby's leg," he added. "I wasn't the guy who represented England at all those youth levels, I wasn't the up-and-coming Sunderland player."
"They were my super-heroes and when Wenger came out and said what he said...it still hurts to be honest. It will never go away. He keeps bringing it up and I just don't understand it."
"Word would go round 'that was the guy who broke Diaby's leg'. You are playing there for fun, not to try to make a career and you have to listen to someone shouting, 'that is the f*****g w****r who broke Diaby's leg'."
Good to see he still thinks about it and that it's followed him ever since. Wanker.![]()
Dan Smith joins a (dis)honourable list of journey men players that took the media's advice and kicked Arsenal because "they didn't like it like that". We laugh about Diaby on this thread and this forum but in reality he was destroyed by thuggery and I have argued this point to death with supporter of other clubs but in my opinion it is no coincidence that of the worst four or five injuries in Premier League history three of them have been sustained by Arsenal players in the Wenger era.g88ner wrote:http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/footba ... Because he signed a long term contract in January 2010 that was on the back of good form and a decent run of games that didn't give too much of an indication of what was to come.rodders999 wrote:Was it Dan Smith that awarded baked bean head TWO bumper new contracts since that tackle then? He played 54 league games over a 2 year period - or - made 54 appearances?g88ner wrote:Because he signed a long term contract in January 2010 that was on the back of good form and a decent run of games that didn't give too much of an indication of what was to come.rodders999 wrote:Was it Dan Smith that awarded baked bean head TWO bumper new contracts since that tackle then? He played 54 league games over a 2 year period. But since the new contract, he's played 32 games in 5 years.
We blame Wenger for many things but there wasn't outrage when Diaby signed a new contract. It's more in hindsight that it's been proven to be a bad decision.
Go back and check the forum posts from January 1 and 2 2010... no one is losing there shit about it at all.
We honoured his contract despite the injuries and I think the club deserves credit for that. The main problem is that we didn't really replace him for a few seasons so his absence was a problem (for that I blame Wenger) but I'm happy that we didn't chuck him away as some on here wanted.
Football is about taking tough decisions and weighing up pro’s v con’s. In my opinion Diaby was never good enough to warrant giving him a bumper deal in case he came good. The guy always had plenty of natural talent but never seemed to have the right mentality. Even when he did get runs in the side, his performances were as much characterised by him being caught on the ball because he simply wasn’t aware of what was going on around him as it was his ability to run with the ball and take occasional long range shots.rigsby wrote:Think you're being unfair and slightly flippant here Rodders. That injury has severely hampered the guy. I don't blame Wenger for having a certain loyalty to the guy. It may not be a good thing for a football manager to do, but as a man I have to have some admiration for it.
Plus, a lot of people on here were saying to get rid of RVP around 2009 because of the injuries, and then look what happened. It's a risk, and it failed with Diaby, but some would argue a risk worth taking.
If it was just the one or two players it could be overlooked, but how many players has he persevered with before finally admitting they are just not up to scratch? And he is usually the last to admit it.rigsby wrote:Think you're being unfair and slightly flippant here Rodders. That injury has severely hampered the guy.
