Pity they didn't take their own 'mind the gap' advice literally last week when Negredo and Aguero were driving a bus between Dawson and Kaboul

Arsenal send AVB and Spurs into a 'negative spiral' – 18 years of hurt in quotes

AS Arsenal take fourth place in the Premier League ahead of arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur, we look back at the words of Spurs' manager Andre Villas-Boas. Would Spurs undo 17 years of hurts and finally finish the season above Arsenal? Said AVB back in March 2013:

"The difference this year is that we are on an upward spiral in terms of confidence whereas they are in a negative spiral and once you get into that negative spiral it's difficult to get out of it."

While AVB wonders about his side's own negative spiral, we look back at some other comments of Spurs players who saw the rosy-fingered dawn only to realise it was the red of Arsenal disappearing over the horizon:

2013 – Gareth Bale:

"I think now we have overtaken them on the pitch."

2013 – Emmanuel Adebayor:

"Last season at the last game of a tough race, you know what happened. We don't want to commit the same mistake. For me it's a big chance to show people I was right to leave Arsenal, which means finishing on top of them. If that's with Tottenham even better."

2011 – Peter Crouch:

"Arsenal are still ahead of us in the Premier League, but we are getting a lot closer — soon we will be above them in the league."

2010 – Rafael van der Vaart:

"Arsenal have a great team but our squad is not worse than Arsenal's."

2010 – Van der Vaart again:

"Can Arsenal finish above us? No. No chance. We're better."

2009 – Harry Redknapp:

"Arsène has done a great job there over the years. But we're getting closer to them, without a doubt."

2009 – Robbie Keane:

"If you look at the last four or five years, Arsenal always got ahead of us slightly, but if you look now, it's certainly even. And if you look at the squads, the bench we have is probably a little bit stronger than their bench."

2008 – Jermaine Jenas:

"We can definitely overtake Arsenal next year."

2007 – Darren Bent:

"Spurs are a club that are definitely going forward. There's no reason why we can't catch Arsenal, which is what makes this season coming so exciting."

And on it goes...

Its like a form of self harm for them. My neighbours are the same - every fucking season this is going to be the one where they definitely overtake us. You'd think after that Lasagne in 2006 they'd have given up on the self abuse but they never fail to entertain us with their banter. Just a shame that twitching wanker isn't there to oversee it all still.....

not an easy game for them on Wednesday either.

fulham will be looking to impress the new manager.

its when not if for AVB. like the previous 8 in the last 16 years, all casualties of unrealistic expectations.

i think AVB is a not a bad manager - but he has only 4 years experience and is still only 36, way too inexperienced to be a top three PL manager.

Think AVB is a victim of his own success to the extent that he's not up to the Chelsea job or even the Spurs job right now. He obviously had a good team at Porto but it's a truly atrocious league and I think that if he picked up a job like Southampton or something he'd have been given far more leniency in terms of expecting immediate results and allowing him to implement his own methods etc. I'm aware I'm talking in cliches but I think he's still finding his feet as a manager and he's not ready to take on the sort of revamp projects that Spurs and that Chelsea team needed.

AVB s picking fights with the media and Alan Sugar now.

Some of what AVB says is right but this will not end well, you never win when you pick fights with the media.

Just stick to getting results and like all journos , they'll start fellating you again because it sells papers.

Apparently they played some other team in a mid table clash but I don't have the details as they only report the top 4 in Asia

Even if we don't win the league, them lot crying & pissing themselves at the thought of us winning it is hilarious
