hmmm yeah it's a tricky one... you need a good sounding one like YNWA, something like 'swing low' or 'fools rush in' or 'jerusalem', one that stirs something inside you when you hear it belted out... not just for us but for the opposition fans and players as well. how many times i wonder has hearing YNWA lifted a tired liverpool player for one last push?
thinking about it now i fear that songs like 'somewhere over the rainbow' and 'singing in the rain' wouldn't really have the same impact
but please, please not 'wonderwall'!

I'm with you - let's put an end to this 'Wonderwall' stuff right now. As was said earlier in the thread, the Mancs would piss themselves if we sang that.
But 'Fools Rush In' is the best idea I've heard so far. Looked up the lyrics, found myself humming it for ages. So there you go, Elvis has my vote!
P.S - 'Fools Rush In' is quite fitting given Mr. Wenger's reluctance to enter the transfer market. Ha!

Song that might work with a bit of tweaking....
How about..... Fly me to the Moon (Sinatra)
Fly me to the moon
Let me sing among those stars
Let me see what spring is like
On jupiter and mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby kiss me
Fill my heart with song
Let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, once you get over the "moon" part (and the reference to Man City)and the somewhat cheesy lyrics, I dare you to listen to it and not sing or hum along.... some words might need some tweaking or changing (I will leave this to the more creative members on this board), but I think it can take off!

Ed has hit the target by accident in his editorial (a bit like the beast v Liverpool). How about?
It had to be you, it had to be you;
I wandered around, and finally found - the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue;
And even be glad, just to be sad, thinking of you.
Some others I've seen, might never be mean;
Might never be cross, or try to be boss,
But they wouldn't do.
For nobody else, gave me a thrill - with all your faults, I love you still.
It had to be you, wonderful you;
It had to be you.
Arsenal, Arsenal etc etc
...with all your faults I love you still...so 2006-2007 season!
Need to get around the 'blue' mention but some creative genius will find a way...

Hi all,
Just like to say that as potential anthems go, the impossible dream is perfect. The meanings are great. Arsenal DARE to dream the impossible (a la wenger's invincible prediction); there is triumphalism, bottle, bravery, loyalty- the works. 'bridge over troubled water' is a moving song, but it doesn't seem apt for a team always seeking perfection.
How can this be made a reality? Reading redaction's section on Resistance, seems like the Club themself will be the big problem. Let's hope it can be made a reality.
"This is my quest.....!"

Just as we shouldn't have Wonderwall because the mancs would never let us live it down........we should also not use a song used by another team. It's like saying that we're not good enough to come up with our own so we nicked someone elses.
We're better than that.
Somewhere Over A Rainbow ticks most of the boxes for me, especially with the link to Alan Ball. And so what if it's a bit naff. Personally I think Good Old Arsenal is naff. If it wasn't already an Arsenal song it certainly wouldn't get off the ground now. It's a throwback to when football somgs were rubbish and the early days of teams producing songs for the cup finals.
There was a suggestion a few posts ago about "I believe in Angels". Again, naff. Naff but it could well work. One of the key things is that the song has to be singable. "The Impossible Dream" is not singable, certainly not by a large crowd. 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' and 'I Believe in Angels' are. Also, change 'Angels' for 'Arsenal' and it starts to make more sense......
I have a dream
a song to sing
to help me cope
with anything
if you see the wonder
of a fairy tale
you can take the future
even if you fail
I believe in angels (Arsenal)
something good in
everything I see
I believe in angels (Arsenal)
when I know the time
is right for me
I'll cross the stream
I have a dream
I have a dream
a fantasy
to help me through
reality
and my destination
makes it worth the while
pushing through the darkness
still another mile
I believe in angels (Arsenal)
something good in
everything I see
I believe in angels (Arsenal)
when I know the time
is right for me
I'll cross the stream
I have a dream

I like 'Over the rainbow'- it's one to throw in the hat definitely. The idea behind it doesn't appeal so much to me though- it's like daydreaming about success. Impossible Dream is more about trying to achieve and not giving up- that is a great thing.
I don't know why 'Impossible Dream' is unsingable either, it's got an easy melody, it's a bit long, true, but then so are all the suggestions here. YNWL is only 3 verses (with chorus) so there's no point making comparisons. Is any other club singing this? Maybe it's time we did.
What is on the gooner shortlist so far??

Ed's note - Not my posting, but an email I was sent by Chris Cotton which seems to fit best here. So over to Chris...
With all the talk of finding a 'signature tune' how about a version of Strawberry Fields. i.e. Highbury Fields - fits easily in the tune and, crucially, refers to a real place.
Let me take you down, cos I'm going to Highbury Fields
Nothing is real, and nothing to get hungabout - someone think of something for that line
Highbury Fields forever
Highbury Fields forever
Highbury Fields forever
Now working on that shouldn't be too hard - Highbury Fields Forever
- Chris Cotton

I can not believe that some people are suggesting songs like Over the Rainbow and singing in the rain. Do you people go to games? Do you understand anything about terrace culture?
Can you not see how monumentally stupid it would sound singing over the rainbow?
The thing is this anthem thing is NEVER going to work. We have good old Arsenal. Sing that. Or you are my Arsenal. Sing that.
The idea that we can just start singing the impossible dream or whatever and it will become our 'anthem' will just not work!
