It needs to be remembered that the majority of those players came in for little or no transfer fees though. Whilst the money Almunia was on could have been given to a better keeper, where was the transfer fee coming from? I suppose it comes down to how much cash was legitimately available for actual transfers.....and if you believe it.DB10GOONER wrote:This ^^g88ner wrote:It's bonkers to go into next season with Diaby, Flamini and Arteta on our books. It's insane. Captain Stupid is a liability. Arteta is waaaay past his best. And Diaby is a perma-crocked non event. This harks back to the most stupid money-wasting days of Wenger's reign when we had uber-shite like Almunia, Flappy, Legohead, Mong, FatSantos, Squillaci, Park, (the injured for 7 years) RVJC, Vela etc etc all commanding big to huge wages whilst Arsene was telling us we had no money to compete.

On the day Kauto Star fell over and was shot, I was, for some reason, reminded that we still have this chap on our books.

Today, Tuesday 30th June, is the day his contract with the club finally expires. I'm throwing a party at midnight to celebrate getting shot of the bastard

Re: Abou Diaby - Injuries Thread
Fair point, but whilst the prospective transfer fee money "saved" (or not spent, as such) could be lauded initially, it doesn't change the fact that Arsene then extended the contracts of far too many of those poor quality players and gave them pay rises after it was very obvious those players were not good enough. Our wage bill was on a par with manure's and chavski's for years and yet we weren't competing with them by any stretch of the imagination.kiwomya wrote:It needs to be remembered that the majority of those players came in for little or no transfer fees though. My point has always been that the money spent on those pay rises and far too high wages could have been better spent by Wenger admitting (at least to himself) that he'd got it wrong with certain players, releasing them and then using the money saved to buy/sign or pay wages to a smaller group of better quality players.
Just look at the isolated (and admittedly extreme) case of Diaby. We have received zero return on our investment. And yet Wenger paid him huge wages and extended his contract repeatedly. A figure emerged a couple of seasons ago that we had allegedly paid Diaby over £27million in wages. If true, (and I think conservative estimates would confirm it is true) then that is appalling waste and mismanagement by Wenger.
Also, the blame doesn't rest with just Wenger. How the Board could talk about not being able to sign better players because of limited funds due to the stadium move, and yet still be able to pay Wenger £7million a year (now £8mill I believe?) is beyond me.
