Another one bites the dust .

Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker has confirmed he will be staying at the club after a summer of speculation.

The 25-year-old centre-half has been linked with a switch to a number of clubs, with Premier League outfit Arsenal rumoured to be interested in his signature.

But the Germany international, who was part of Joachim Low's side that finished third in the World Cup, has now revealed he will remain at the Weserstadion.

"I'm staying at Bremen," Mertesacker told German daily Bild.

"There have been so many rumours concerning me, but I've never had to be concerned because none were concrete."

Mertesacker moved to Bremen from Hannover 96 after an impressive showing in the 2006 World Cup.

He is under contract with Werder until 2012, and will now be focused on improving Bremen's third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season.

He declared he wasnt going about a week ago! I guess we should of acted quicker. More to the point it was probably out of Wengers price range. He only likes spending 8-10 mil on un proven skinny CBs that need at least 3 months before there ready.

Wenger sign some fucking players you mug!

Standard says Schwarzer has privately agreed terms with us and we could get him for £3m.Surely we can afford that

I hope Bremen will miss the CL group stage (qualifier against Samp. Genua). Due to lack of money Bremen they might sell him yet again :?

Interview with Ray Parlour...

"I think Schwarzer would be great," Parlour said. "I played with him at Middlesbrough, and he's very solid and dependable. He doesn't make as many ricks as other goalkeepers, and I think he had a lot to do with how well Fulham did last season.

"He would be a great signing for me," continued Parlour, "but with Mark Hughes wanting to keep him, it looks like Wenger might have to go in with the three keepers from last season. Whether that will cost them, we'll see."

Parlour is optimistic that the goalkeeping talent in the ranks will eventually come good. "[Wojciech] Szczesny, who was on loan at Brentford last season, has really impressed," he said. "He's still young, but he's a tall guy with good presence. Fabianski has made some bad ricks but is a good keeper.

"He won't go out and spend £30 million on a goalkeeper, or someone expensive like [Hugo] Lloris from Lyon - it just won't happen."

I know we are past bored of all this by now... but another update:

"FULHAM slapped a £10million price tag on Mark Schwarzer last night to prove that only silly money will prize the star keeper out of their grasp.

New boss Mark Hughes is determined to keep the 37-year-old out of Arsenal’s clutches – even if that means letting Schwarzer go for nothing when the Aussie’s contract runs out next summer.

For all that, Hughes made it plain only a ridiculous bid would force him to seek a replacement ahead of the opening Premiership match at Bolton tomorrow.

A club insider said: “Everyone has his price. But how much is anyone going to pay for a player – as good as Mark is – in the last year of his contract? I doubt even the wealthiest will match Fulham’s valuation.
