G88ner. You're always one keen to talk up this illusory "progress". Would you like to elaborate on this season's progress please? (Given we now need 4 wins just to match last season's total?)
Looking forward to your excu...errrr, I meant answers!
:D

You say I talk up our progress, but I only seem optimistic compared to some because I don't bang on about the negatives all the time.
- I'm aware things are far from perfect, but I don't have anything new to say on the negatives so tend to focus more on the positives.

The positives for me are that:

1. We're in the FA Cup final for the 2nd year running. Considering we'd gone 9 years potless before that, I'd say that's a positive, surely?

2. We're finally buying big money players. This season we signed Sanchez and last season it was Ozil. That's a positive if we're going to ever improve the team, surely?

3. We've beaten United and Citeh away this season. That's a step forward compared to recent seasons because that record was getting ridiculous

4. Our form since January has been something like W11 D1 L2 - I fail to see how that can be painted as anything other than a positive step? - and the season before we were top for the longest of any club, which although was partly helped by a kind fixture list is still better than what we'd achieved in previous seasons. So, it's a positive.

But yes, there's negatives. We all know that. Do I need to list them as well?

g88ner our form since the turn of the year has been great but our results in the first few months of the season were little short of a disaster     I am (harshly  ) viewed as being overly negative on here, but even I am amazed that we need to win 4 out of our last 5 to match last seasons points tally

Augie, the first half of the season was ridiculous even by Arsenal standards...

- Our only decent striker breaks his leg and misses 4 months or so :?
- Our new right back gets 2 consecutive 3 month injuries!
- We played many games with a full back at centre back because Koscielny was injured and we didn't sign a back up!
- Our centre midfielders take it in turns to get injured, until finally Wilshere and Arteta break completely forcing us to bring a loanee back from Charlton!
- Ozil misses several months through injury and Theo has been out for a year.

And pretty much all of that happened in the first half of the season simultaneously!

The fact we've come back from that calamity with the form we've had since the New Year has surprised me. I just didn't expect it, so credit where it's due.

Also... why is it surprising you when comparing this seasons points tally with last? :? - we were top of the league for much of last season, so we clearly picked up plenty of points.

As I mentioned on the Chelsea thread, progress for me is reaching later stages of cup competitions or amassing more points than the previous year.

Knowing we have to win 4 from 5 to total the same points as last season with one of those being at Man Ure, I can't see us bettering that tally. Given that we went out at the same stage of the CL but to a Monaco side hardly in the class of Bayern or Barca, and that we pissed away the League Cup at the first hurdle, at best we've stood still, and on balance have regressed

Its all very well picking the Calendar Year trophy highlight of the previous season and the second half of this season, but why ignore the other half of both ? All it proves is that the squad isn't equipped to compete for the title over 38 games.....something we all knew last Summer when looking at the defence and CDM positions. He eventually bought Gabriel when it was too late to compete (and only did because of injury to Kos) and had no option but to recall Coquelin as a desperate last throw of the dice when Flamoney, Arteta, Wilshere and Ramsey were all fucked at the same time.

There will be no top quality striker signed this summer, nor CDM, or additional defender. Nor will he have the balls to sign Cech and flog Chesney.....so next season we will still be a minimum of 12 points from the title and wondering what would have been had we signed those 2 players that Souness and everyone else keeps claiming will make us challengers. It's been 2 players since 2005

I know, I know. But it is relevant.

People mock our progress ("top 2 trophy", "most points in a calendar year trophy", "best half season trophy", "top of the league for the longest trophy") but the fact these "humorous" (  ) awards are happening more frequently and within the last couple of years suggest that progress is there, surely? :rubchin:

Exactly! see, we are showing progress. Completely agree mate.

79pts last season - most since 2008. This year (despite the ridiculous injuries) could be at least 2nd highest since 2008. That's clearly progress.

2 consecutive FA Cup finals (and 1 win so far!) compared to none in the previous 8 years. Again, progress.

Nobody will be satisfied with what we've done this season as there's too many negatives, but we're showing progress relative to the last few years.

Putting your sarcastic and negative hat to one side, can you honestly not see an ounce of progress relative to the last few years? - you asked me about progress, so I listed some but you haven't replied.

Where the fuck were you when Eboue, Denilson, Song and Bendtner were in the team at the turn of the decade? - honestly, we've progressed since then. I'm sure of it.

When your idea of progress, is relative to the Eboue/Song/Denilson/Diaby midfield then you know how desperate you are.
FFS with due respect, I'd say that Palace have a better midfield than that shower now. So is that the ambition our fans have? Shocking. As long as you pick the lowest common denominator - which you seem to, it's no surprise you've been banging on about progress every passing year! I guarantee that 5 years from now we'll still be in the wilderness and you'll be talking "progress"

You sure your name ain't George Osbourne?
