Ironically the case has been referred to the IPCC. A question has already been asked why there was no rapid response medics available on the scene. If there is a chance a taser may be used, it makes sense to have someone close by at least on standby. RIP Atkinson I remember that great goal you scored vs the wombles.

Clearly you must be a bit of a lurker as I can't ever remember debating anything with you. I was thinking out loud, if the police are called to his house and he has previous issues with them, then perhaps they may know if he has any mental or other health issues?

It was an open question, not a suggestion. Perhaps you need to read my post?

In fairness buddy, I would agree that it was a ridiculous suggestion -

1. No cop goes to a scene expecting to taser, so how would they have medics on standby ?
2. When things get out of hand, who has time to research a persons medical history, and also who would have access to it in these days of patient-doctor confidentiality ?
3. Most importantly, it was his dads house that the incident occurred at, so even if by miracle they did have his medical history, they wouldn't have associated it with the address in question

I know these days the cops are viewed with a huge amount of suspicion (and understandably so in some cases), but tasering a guy who is trying to kill his old man is a perfectly reasonable course of action in my opinion - too often these days, there is a reluctance/refusal to apportion the blame on the aggressor or the criminal, and the apologists are a large part of the reason why criminals will continue to thrive in an era where accountability doesn't exist

Also RIP to the wife and three kids of the b*stard who murdered them with a hatchet and knife in cavan last week before also killing himself. All sorts of rumours circulate since about how the husband (who was a vice principal in a primary school ) suffered with depression (rumours yet to be proven either way), but the guy left notes pinned to the outside doors of his house asking neighbours to contact the cops, and he also left letters inside the house - this was no snap reaction and making excuses for the c.unt is outrageous imo. You could understand a man killing his wife (which of us hasn't thought about it ? ), but to kill innocent kids is barbaric and inexcusable.

How the wife's family have allowed him to be buried alongside her and the kids is something I will never understand

Also, UK Police (despite their reputation with all the police-hating, street fighting rebels on here ) are probably one of the most non-violent police forces in the world. Saw a very interesting documentary a couple months back where a group of concerned US Police Chiefs visited the UK to see how UK police dealt with aggressive and violent offenders - this was in the wake of the furore over US police killing unarmed (but sometimes violent) black males in the states.

The US police chiefs sat there open mouthed as they watched dashboard footage of UK police trying to calm an extremely aggressive and violent man who was threatening them with a knife. The UK cops had nightsticks and tasers drawn, but just kept backing up, placing a car between them and the offender, whilst they tried to talk him down. Eventually the guy dropped the knife and was arrested. When asked what the outcome would have been in the USA all the top US cops sat there said "That guy with the knife would have been shot dead".

My point being that possibly Atkinson was so violent he had to be tasered?

It was appalling. Stories circulating now that he was a known wife beater too. Not sure how true those stories are of course but the callous, planned nature of the murders might back up the violent abuser stories and is truly shocking. How anyone could hurt their own kids (never mind beat and hack them to death) is beyond me.

RIP to that poor woman and her poor kids.

Wasn't a fan of his tbh (I never liked much of the original ska, just the 2 Tone revival and the third wave - and I hate reggae), but sorry to hear of his death as his influence on the ska music I love was massive. Without him there would have been no Specials, or at least a very different Specials.

I think he was still performing live into his late 60's / early 70's too.

Gangsters by the specials is basically his Al Capone song reworked, Madness is his originally redone by "Madness"

T tone stuff is a bit faster, with better backing sounds etc but the original ska still stands up well.
