THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

Want to win the Cup again to a point of being obsessed about it but there can be no pretence of progression this season regardless of retaining the Cup or not. If Wenger sees progression then he is basing it on not getting battered at the bigger clubs like City , Chelsea etc. if he is seeing progression and basing it on not being battered by City etc then it shows him for what he is. That is where our club is at. That will not change with Wenger in charge, Wenger is going nowhere so we live with it.

can we at least not have the usual deluded types come on here in August saying that we can win the league.
last summer's optimism just because we bought Sanchez was quite frankly embarrasing.

we don't have a striker, until we buy one then we won't ever finish higher than 3rd.

To be fair - most on here are a small minority that want him gone. There are a few brave souls who come on here and snipe when things are looking good, but then the usual things happen (the usual deficiencies), they disappear. I don't think that anyone on this forum thinks that we will win the league with Wenger in charge (other than those select few who snipe).

I get the sentiment and would agree that some people are deluded. However, we are capable of winning the league as the other clubs at the top are clearly not as good as they were in previous seasons (a strong reason put forward by the WOB's as to whywe haven't progressed). We should go into the season with the belief that we could win it or there is little point in even bothering to turn up.

Can we win the league next season? Yes, of course we can.
Are we likely to? No, not without some considerable changes and better players in certain positions.

This is exactly what he will say, and in fact already has; the ever-moveable Arsene Wenger goalposts.

But isn't that progress? even if only miniscule?

We all want to see the level of progress being far greater than it is but you can't argue that progress isn't progress because it's only a little bit. It may only also be progress in one area, but it's progress none the less.

Perhaps Spuddy, but it needs to balanced against yet again being dumped out of Europe at the first attempt and dropping points in home bankers vs the likes of Swansea and Sunderland, with all due respects to both of those sides.

One foot step forward, two passes sideways in this case.

And that is why I say it is totally subjective and open to individual opinions. This is also why I get frustrated with some of the sweeping generalisations that are often made here and are normally followed with the 'if you disagree you must be mad' type of statement. This is why I get annoyed when I see things like 'can we at least not have the usual deluded types come on here in August saying that we can win the league'. They're not deluded, they just have a different opinion. They're also right, we can win the league next season. I don't think we will, but we can, there's nothing deluded about that.
Personally I think we've made some overall progress, but just a little.

To think I was actually pissed off at Robert Green for gifting the Chavs their late winner at Loftus Road.
Even if had got within 3 points of them, we were always going to bottle it at some point.

but that is not going to happen is it with Wenger still in charge!
how many years of failure will it take for you to realise this?

Arsenal FC 2015 is about finishing inside the top 4, there is no desire to win the league - it costs too much money for too little reward.

I have accepted this and gradually go less and less as the whole charade is utterly pointless.

You question the quality of the teams we have beaten in the cup yet Chelsea were dumped out by Bradford and City lost 2-0 to Boro.

You can't really be that much of a simpleton, surely, to drag that out as a defence of your hero?

ROFL. I suppose that'd make Swansea a nouveau Real Madrid for thrashing Bradford in that cup final after they dumped Arsenal out.. You gotta love AKB logic! :barscarf: :barscarf:

Technically speaking, Spud is correct. Arsenal Could win the league. By the same token, Liverpool or Southampton also Could win the league. We all know they won't, but by virtue of being in the division they could do it? :rubchin:

season 2014/15 the season of progress

August - scrape through into the CL with a hard fought 1-0 win over 2 legs v Besiktas
September - dumped out of the Carling Cup in our first match v Southampton (at home)
October - the traditional annual defeat at Chelsea - this year only 2-0 so progress?
November - the traditional annual defeat at Man United
December - the traditional annual defeat at Stoke City
January - Southampton record their second win of the season over us
February - Derby day defeat at Tottenham
March - heroic win in Monaco but we crash out of the CL in the last 16 as usual
April - scrape through into the FA Cup final with a hard fought extra time win over lowly championship side Reading
May - heroic 0-0 home draw v Sunderland to (somehow!!) secure 3rd place in the PL
