THE WENGER THREAD

As we're unlikely to see terraces again at football, this is the virtual equivalent where you can chat to your hearts content about all football matters and, obviously, Arsenal in particular. This forum encourages all Gooners to visit and contribute so please keep it respectful, clean and topical.

I hope that's in jest. Unfortunately hard to tell with some posters on here.

The rule of thumb for this forum is as follows: if it's hard to tell the intention of the poster, always assume the worst!!

By now history should have told you, as far as the board is concerned (us fans are an irrelavence) he has delivered. All they require is top 4, the cups are just to placate the AKB's and the wobbling WOB's
Thankfully the majority of WOB's are not convinced by scrappy cup runs.

Well, Wenger has killed (the hope of) 70 million Gooners, so they're broadly comparable. *

*Which is a fucking joke.

Which proves it's just a line he trots out regardless of his plans.

You have to take Wenger's comments with a large pinch of salt, but we all know that. We learn very little from his answers on transfers.

I think the relevant point is that on the vast majority of occasions, his words were backed up by his actions. Many of us feel that the signings of ozil and sanchez were pr signings rather than tactical one's because they were not positions of need, and the fear is that the cech signing will fill that need this time around and that there will be no big interest from the manager or the club to make any more big signings this summer

I don't accept that Sanchez was a PR signing and not tactical.

He signed early in the summer and has added so much to this team that it's churlish to suggest that was off the back of a PR stunt.

That said, I find it harder to dismiss your claims about Ozil as it did have a whiff of a last minute panic buy about it, as it wasn't necessarily in the position(s) we needed nor did there appear to be a well thought out plan from Wenger of how to use him.

I'm still pleased we signed him, although it probably stopped us signing Cesc a year later

I'm not denying that sanchez has been a huge buy for us but what I am saying, is that the natives were getting very restless and the heat and spotlight were very firmly on the manager and the board, and what better way to appease the peasants than to buy a player like sanchez or ozil ?
Maybe it is just bad management (wouldnt surprise me of course) but the fact is that we had many other far more pressing needs last summer than a winger, so that makes me think that instead of a transfer with the team in mind, it was a high profile with the club in mind type of signing. Again the year before we had cazorla that could play the number 10 position and it was totally ridiculous that we should sign ozil regardless of his world class talent. With that in mind I do wonder if cech is this summer's pr signing - ospina had been doing a good job (and had certainly deserved the chance to prove that he was top quality) and to buy another keeper (regardless of his proven quality) before signing a striker and DM, is total bullshit to me and just continues down the road of an unbalanced team

I'm not expecting le cock to do much more incoming transfer business and I'm certainly not expecting any more high quality signings

AGREED the major concern is Wengers refusal to address the DM role, thats criminal, How many years have we been saying it......

As you say Ospina was putting in solid displays and was a welcome relief to that polish clown spreading panic through the back four

See Arteta is injured already, thats to be expected, will put money on Coquelin getting injured early in the season, and thats it we are exposed at the back again, with no DM again, similar to last year but that was CB crisis......

I give up with this its doing my brain in.....cant Wenger see it, or is he too busy counting his 5 million a year :banghead:
