No, that's a reason why Everton might win (which is a fair comment, n7)....

What I was confused by, in ****'s post, was that someone , in the space of 1 week, and 1 pre-season friendly, would change their opinion so dramatically! - it's the very definition of knee-jerk.... knee-jerk optimism based on the Emirates Cup, and knee-jerk pessimism based on the result tonight.

Opinions should be formed with time and consideration... not momentary fluctuations of emotion.

I agree 100% about the opinions and that they should be formed over a peirod of time. My opinion is that we are too weak in defence to go upto goodison and get a win.

Even after the Emirates cup people should have seen that Sunderland beat Athletico madrid 2-0 in the amsterdam cup and then after todays result see that Rangers are also crap because they lost to portsmouth we played aginst rubbish opposition pre season and tonight our first big test (away aginst a good spanish side) we failed and looked crap.

All I hope is the team proves me wrong and we get a win up at Everton.

Oh Dear ! :(

We have, this pre season played, 2 decent sides Athletico and Valencia. It doesn't bode well. Just how inept do we have to be before the penny drops for Wenger, that we are defensively inadequate ? :( :( :(

I won't even mention midfeild. :( :( :(

Jesus H Christ at the pessimism!

I saw a thread a few days ago slating Man City's chances as they hadn't won a pre season game (before they built celtic). The responses to this were along the lines of you should not look at pre season as a guide to the way the season will go.

A point I would like to make:

People slating our opposition: Man City lost to Rangers and Liverpool lost to Atletico Madrid today at Anfield. Its pre season results mean nothing!

It's pre season we have the quality to beat Everton, we have the quality to beat anyone on our day and despite the sales this is still true. The key thing is on our day.

The ammount of pessimism from some of you is unbelievable. Liverpool have sold Alonso and replaced him with someone untried and injured (how would you respond to that if we did similar?). United have sold their talisman and a key back up and replaced them with a gamble? You ask us to buy but all the roubles in the world have not signed Chelski anyone of note. I do not count Zhirkov as they themselves say they want a marquee signing! The difference none of those teams fans are as negative as ours.

At some point we have to be realistic. Do we want to be begging banks for extension for loans like Liverpool (a team that has not won the league in 20 years!). Another point regarding Liverpool is that despite their outlay they have not won a trophy for three years, when this was Arsenal last year it was all over the media. Liverpool are similar to us in the fact that they came close last year in the league but came up short. The difference is that the media make a big deal of us as we have won the league in the last twenty years, and that we do do things differently by operating within our means. Arsenal are the epitome of a club that the media does not like (I work in the media trade). They like money to be splashed, even if it is beyond the means of a club.

Speaking to fellow fans, non-forum posters, there is a lot of quiet optimism around them. This forum is full of negativity. Do you see Liverpool fans be so negative even though they have lost a couple of pre season games to teams I would expect Arsenal to beat. No, they still support their team! And they spend £18 million on a full back and again they have not won the league in twenty years!

Wait until the season has begun, who knows we have two tough periods come through that, we may do what nobody is expecting!

It could be worse we could be spurs fans, no europe, and the twitcher is doing his version of Friends reunited!

Just got home only to find that we lost 2-0 to Valencia.
Dont know if am to laugh or cry seeing as Arsene said the team he puts out would most likely start against Everton.
The rest of the footballing world is moving forward and we seem to have missed the bus or refuse to get on :banghead:

And what is it that they are optimistic about ? The fact that Liverpool have sold Alonso and the fact that Man U have sold Ronaldo and Tevez. ?

I'd prefer to be optimistic about something - positive - that we have done. For the last 2 years our shortcomings in the areas of central defence and central midfield, our almost total vulnerablity to set pieces and aimless punts through the centre of our defence, have been apparent to everyone.

And we are still waiting for Wenger to do something meaningful about it.

Sorry mate but I would bet my house that is a lie. No Gooner in their right mind can honestly be optimistic. They may not be negative like us realists but I just don't believe that statement.

I assure you its not a lie. Season ticket holders I have spoken to are not as negative as this forum.

On our day we can beat anyone. People ignore the good run we were on towards the end of the season! Yes we have problems but so do other so called big teams! Yes we could be in another fight for fourth but we could be challenging to the end. There was a good article in the Telegraph that tipped us for the league. I suppose the writer was a rose tinter! Just supprt the team and see what happens, constructive critiscm is good, sheer negativity does not help anyone or anything!

You say liverpool have only replaced alonso with someone unproven and injured. At least they have replaced him. Look at us we sell Toure and replace him with someone unproven and injured in Vermalen. We have also sold Adebayor and have replace him with who?

Chelsea fans are not unhappy as they won the FA cup last season and have a new manager.

Liverpool fans are not unhappy as they came close in the League last year and have replaced the players they have sold.

Man u fans are not unhappy as they won the league last year got to the champions league final and they have replaced Tevez and Ronaldo with Valencia and Owen.

Our fans are unhappy as we came well short in the league lost the semi of the FA cup thanks to our shit squad and we got smashed by man u in the champions league and wenger has done nothing to address the issues in the team let alone replace players who have gone.
