The Sol Campbell Signing Thread
am i the only one who thinks this its gr8 to have him back?? he is exactly well not exactly but close enough the type of player that our young gunners need.
he is not scared of anyone and that is vital as central defender. the young english boys will gain a lot from him and he already knows the arsenal way.
this reminds me of the time when gary mcalister signed for a young lpool side.

That's a very good point. So many of us have been banging on for ages about our lack of experience. But of all our ex-players still playing, Sol is probably not the best option for getting back that experience.sycicsid wrote:am i the only one who thinks this its gr8 to have him back?? he is exactly well not exactly but close enough the type of player that our young gunners need.

I find Arsene's over 30 policy baffling, especially when he goes and does this.
agreed. the main point here is we havent gone and signed a random player from kenya.
i'd have sol back anyday as he has that presence within the squad and the young boys will feel that extra boost behind them...
like PV used to. remember a quote from cesc when he was starting out that if PV was in the middle of the park then the confidence of the team would double due to his presence.
not saying sol has the same aura as PV but you get my drift.

I still cant believe it - id never have seen this coming, BFS is back!
Looking at it, it is only a temporary arrangement, 6 months, pay as you play from what i hear - he si at the club anyway, if Wenger thinks he can do a job as a squad player (and Wenger is reknown for the way he monitors fitness etc) - what have we got to lose?
If we can get a few good games out of him then it will be worth it, and the benefits to the young players will be good.
Some people were praying for Vieira back to lift the squad, well, we have one of the invincibles back!! Joking aside he was always a good leader in his day, we'll see in the next few months how this one goes!

Erm, the Premier League title or Champions League if he's not up to it and one of the first two are injured/suspended at a crucial time. And based on his performances in his last year at Portsmouth I'd be a little bit worried about his capability, he was a real weak link. If it comes off, and there is still enough talent left that it might then Wenger is right as so often and well done to him. The good news is at least we know he can handle big games mentally.Bendtners Drinking Buddy wrote:I still cant believe it - id never have seen this coming, BFS is back!

Basically this is a cheapskate option because Wenger can't be bothered to sign a proper defender who is playing at the top level for a little bit of money to give us proper back up. And don't give me crap about blocking young players, we don't have so many young centre halves in the first team and if the reserves can't get past a little competition then tough shit. We're Arsenal, you don't just walk into the first team.
Anyone who can post on this forum that they think the signing of Campbell is in any way positive has to be taking the piss.
So he is only signed as cover, right lets picture this scenario.
Scores are locked at 0-0 with 30mins to go, for the sake of arguement let's say we are playing Citeh. TV picks up an injury.
Would anyone in their right mind feel confident about a 36 year old Sol Campbell, coming on to defend against the speed or agility of Bellamy, Tevez or Robinho. The same can be said of Torres, Rooney or any forward the right side of 30.
You can wear all the rosetinted glasses you wish, but to seriously claim any positives in this signing just makes the poster look like a fucking imbecile.

steady on folks.
Look at it any way sid...
man u v man city 0-0, vidic goes off do the feel comfortable about playing brown? or even carrick as a midfielder?
liverpool v everton and off goes carragher? on comes skirtel?
same sort of thing
my point is he may not strike the fear into opponents and may be thought of as a walk over etc but AW must see somet about him to offer him any form of contract?
hopefully we wont have to see lots of him but if we do im confident he can still do a good job with BG or TV alongside him

As for brown he is a current longstanding player at utd, and yes I would prefer him to Sol, However do you think that if brown left utd, that Fergie would bring him back at the ripe old age, in football terms of 36.pingu wrote:steady on folks.

As for Carrick those were extreme circumstances with virtually utd's entire defence out, that would be more comparable to Arsenal having to play Cesc in defence.
Skirtel, well he is mad Rafa's problem, and I would compare that more to Wenger having to play Senderos, who again because of age and fitness I would prefer to Sol.
What's wrong here is people are trying to defend the signing of Campbell because it reflects badly on Wenger's judgement.
When all is said and done he is a player who has long past his sell-by date. And he will cost us points if he plays.
He has a history of losing it upstairs when things get tough and suffers from a tendancy to fantasise. Like the time he left Arsenal to play abroad.
And thought he was going to play in Italy (pompeii) but ended up Dorset.
