THE NORTHBANKBREN TV SHOW THREAD

It's all a load of Cannonballs in here! This is the virtual Arsenal pub where you can chat about anything except football. Be warned though, like any pub, the content may not always be suitable for everyone.

I've just finished season 1 of The Wire. Absolutely superb television. I'm waiting for the complete collection to be delivered so I think I'm going watch the first season again. Anyone else a fan?

Maybe someone can tell me what it is I'm missing with this show....I didn't like it at all. The dialogue, the stories, the pace...watched perhaps 4 or 5 of the first series and gave up...

Perhaps someone can persuade me to give it another go.

The lingo takes a bit of getting used to. I wasn't keen on the first couple of episodes. I watched them once and gave up on them. I decided to give them another go a couple of months later and really got into it.

I like how there whole series is about one case, not like most shows where there's one case per episode. It means that all the characters are really well developed as most of them are in every episode. You also get to see the story from the perspective of the police, the criminals, witnesses, snitches etc.

I recommend you watch it again.

The first series is a bit slow, agreed.

But it gets a lot better, and quicker, and by the middle of second series you realise why it was so highly rated.

I gave The Sopranos a 10 out of 10, The Wire a 9 out of 10.

The Promise on Channel 4 - Watched the first 2 episodes. Compelling programme making, just a few minor snags but overall- first class.

Still, I guess in Britain it won't get a serious look in while the dumb and dumber shows rule the box.

Just watched the final two episodes...and cried during the final episode.

Main characters of the British soldier and his "lover" very well acted.

Threw up some interesting discussion points, especially as to role of British Army during Mandate.

But:

Contempororary sequences poorly scripted and not especially well acted.

Lots of historical problems, fictional incidents spun as fact, lack of context, and what I would call downright misrepresentations makes it controversial and biased anti-Israel programme in my opinion.

But that opens up a whole thread of it's own.
