'Football is about more than splashing out’

By Rob Kelly

Arsène Wenger believes that success in football is about more than merely “splashing out” on big-money signings.

The Arsenal manager has been criticised for not matching the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea in the pursuit of high-profile players.

But the Frenchman insists that the English game is founded on more important principles than simply opening a cheque book.

“I have big respect for the passion about the game in England,” Wenger said. “But football is more than just splashing out. It's much deeper, much bigger than that.

“It's about sweat, thinking, working hard. You have a big tradition of that in England. I believe the pride of this country historically is built on that. It's what makes this football strong and interesting

What a shame that our team is the total opposite to that statement as it sounds good on paper.

Exactly. All the bullshit we're fed about trophies and spending not being the be all and end all would be easier to swallow if we were actually a team that showed pride, passion, commitment and professionalism.

We're not.

According to ANR, Walcott is not signing his contract because of the new clause Arsenal want to impose....ie: no CL qualification, players take a pay cut. It won't work for several reasons......

1) Other clubs probably don't cut wages (especially 'top' clubs)

2) Wenger won't be taking a cut in his salary for further failure

3) Arsenal don't invest in the quality required, therefore it's almost like 'constructive dismissal' where Arsenal FC are driving down wages by deliberately not investing in the quality of the squad and selling their best players (and top earners) year on year, they are taking a gamble on which they almost cannot lose. (No CL money, recoup it through less wages).

4) One man (Wenger the dictator) controls the club, meaning players wages are directly affected by the actions of one man, not necessarily the player himself. Performance related pay becomes Wenger performance related pay.
It actually makes Wenger even more powerful than he is now!!!

This club is doomed, seriously, the future is shockingly bad. Arsenal FC will be the richest mid-table club in world football.

         :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I agree - we've put one of our main Europa League rivals to the sword today, showed great desire and mental strength and overall I believe that Lord Wenger should get that fucking contract extension until 2017

Altogether now, in honour of our thrilling victory......belt it out loud and proud now...

on the performance…
I feel overall we played well. We were a bit lucky maybe on the first penalty because he could have given it or not given it. For the rest we created many chances, kept a clean sheet and have shown a great spirit, which many people questioned after our last game. That's all we could do, we did our job very well.

See - he's proved us all wrong with that infamous 'great spirit'. A monsterous double penalty win against the world beaters from the black country

Yeah they were banging on about this on the stream I was listening to today, apparently players asking for extra training and requesting that the defensive mistakes be looked at in greater detail rather than being brushed aside or ignored.

IF it's true, it's a sorry state of affairs when players are having to demand bollockings rather than having excuses made on their behalf. Speaks volumes about the culture of blamelessness and arrogance that Wenger has instilled in the past few squads when even the players are getting tired of being babysat and mollycoddled.

Wengbot did try his best to cock this one up tbh. He kept the Klingon on the pitch for pretty much 85 minutes even though he was clearly a WBA agent.

Wenger also tried to disrupt our flow, something that he doesn't seem to fancy these days him, by withdrawing the Ox who was one of the key components in our advances.

Have to say that arteta impresses me more and more every week - here is a guy brought up on tactical awareness and is fully aware that success will not come unless mistakes are cut out and acknowledging the mistakes is step 1 on that road. Of course he also knows that at his age time is not on his side so wants to do whatever is necessary to succeed and even that includes more training and/or harder training then he will be the first one at the line to do it.
I know I have said this before but I cant help but wonder what players like mert, arteta, podolski, cazorla etc think about wenger and his tactical acumen/gameplan - regardless of what you think about these players on an individual basis, the fact is that these guys would be used to playing under managers and in systems where tactics are as important or more important than technique and wenger is pre historic in that department

I keep reading posters on here saying that we have the makings of a good team and bar some absolute shite signings (Gervinho I'm looking at you) I would agree we are a bit of a diamond in the rough.

What frustrates me is that we are not finding out how good we could potentially be because we play a tippy tappy slow passing game with players out of position and square pegs in round holes. This squad is probably not on the same level quality wise as the two Manc clubs and hasnt got the same quality attacking options as the Chavs but we should be competing with these teams regardless and a good tactical knowledge can bridge the gap between those that are good and those that are great sides. The big difference today in the Manchester derby was for me the way the two managers responded to the game. Balotelli was given the shepherds crook when Mancini saw it wasnt working just after half time and Ferguson set out his team to actually attack with pace and put is team in with a chance to exploit the quality players they had up top. Playing to your strengths imagine that???? When was the last time there was a proper tactical substitution at the Wengerdome when things werent working?

Instead we have to settle for battling it out for the virtual trophy when greater things are possible.

/Rant over
