Difference is that the need for a back-up forward wasn't as urgent back then as it is now. Agree that we can't truly judge his value to the club until he has played a lot more games but from what I saw of him for France u21 and in the couple of appearances for us, he is not ready to be thrown into the deep end should an injury to Giroud happen. Anelka, on the other hand, had much more to his game (at an even younger age than Sanogo is) and it didn't take much foresight to see he had the tools - if not the experience - for the job. 8)

Yeah having Dennis Bergkamp and Ian Wright probably had something to do with that.

Do you really expect a crock with no proven pedigree and hardly a list of suitors chasing after him to excite the fans when he's one injury to an average striker away form being our main man?

It all depends on what we are paying him ,If hes getting 20 k a week or more then this is the pay of an emerging player into the first team and thus I expect him to be able to perform .
If he gets much less then he should be cultivated for what he is , a promising youngster with some experience.
With the availability of Super Nick and Park who will both play in the league cup his chances could be limited this year.
Im very surprised that Akpom wasnt either loaned out or features in the first team squad though .

Now he's out injured yet again! Another Diaby, we just pay him millions to sit around in a treatment room. For the next :3 years. Total waste of space.

I know heindsight is a B but shouldn't he retire from U21s? It seems you are more likely to get injured on Int duty than any other time.

The key difference that Anelka was a product of the French academy, one of the best in the world at the time, and already attracting the attentions of scouts all over Europe whilst at PSG

Sanogo was let go by second division Auxerre

Anelka showed pace and glimpses of real class right from the start. Postman Pat looks like he's carrying a full sack of latters and is tripping over his cat

Nos89, I would also add that Anelka was added to a squad full of real quality. Why would anyone have been upset by that? I've always said there is nothing wrong with buying in cheap players or youth players and giving them a chance in and of itself, BUT ONLY if they are added to a squad of quality senior players, NOT thrown in at the deep end as first choice players that are effectively cheap options because the manager hasn't built a strong enough team or because the manager is deluded and thinks his failing "project" is more important than the club.
