Re: ALL Transfer talk - merged thread
Ollie Watkins would have been great 3 years ago. But did not look as sharp last season and lost his place to Duran, only regaining it when Duran chose to go to Saudi. Then Emery preferred Rashford (when fit) over him. Yes, he's obviously better than what we have but when you're looking at what our rivals either have or are likely to buy then it's underwhelming.

All done. 11th June was the deadline. Now the money's in the bank, they can stop getting their mates at different papers to plant made-up stories about how we're going to be getting in loads of new players. Give it two weeks and they'll be at it again, briefing them about how Sporting Lisbon and Leipzig kept inflating the price, when the reality is that they didn't once put in a respectful bid. And it ends with Ollie Watkins or some bloke from Bournemouth on loan after a laughable 60m quid deadline day bid for Isaac.

There has been consternation from Arsenal fans about the club not yet spending big on a new striker, with questions being asked of Mikel Arteta and the Gunners' transfer team.
Supporters by and large can't complain too much about a lack of spending under Arteta though - in the five full seasons the Spaniard has been Arsenal manager, they have consistently had one of the highest net spends in the Premier League.
The exception though was last season, where the purchases of David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino were not enough to push Arteta's side upwards from second place.
2020-21: £56.8 million (8th highest net spend in the Premier League that season)
2021-22: £116m (1st)
2022-23: £138.5m (6th)
2023-24: £141.4m (2nd)
2024-25: £21.4m (11th)

What makes it worse is the disingenuous stat that is "net spend". Net spend obviously being the difference between what we have spent and what we have recouped, it is used by apologists and cultists to make excuses for whomever their given beloved manager is.OneBardGooner wrote: ↑Mon Jun 16, 2025 2:31 pmSource BBC:

It is used to show he spent less than thought because he recouped x amount. The point these fuckbrains miss is that net spend is an admission of greater failings than having spent millions. It admits that a certain amount of that money recouped was by selling the shit players the manager bought who have failed.
I never take any notice of net spend. It is a horseshit excuse-making stat.
Judge a manager on what he spends - it is a far more accurate indicator of his ability to spot and sign good players.
