Re: THE GOONERSID BOOK THREAD
Very late to comment on this thred but here goes.
Read all of the 87th precinct novels by Ed McBain many years ago - great police / murder novels.
Read most of Stephen King's books and a few other horror genre writers but got bored of all the gory stuff.
Read quite a few John Grisham books - about trials, lawyers, jury's etc and a few were very good but they became quite samey.
Enjoyed the Dan Brown books and have read quite a few of a similar vein, hidden treasure, conspiricies, cover ups etc good to lose yourself in someting that isn't too hard to follow if you put it down and miss a few days before picking it up again.
Have just finished The Retribution by Val McDermid - about a prisoner who escapes to get his revenge on those he felt were responsible for ruining his life. Its the "wire in the blood" tv series, which you may remember from tv with Robson Green and Hermionie Norris - he is a profiler and she is a DI.
re Arsenal books - The end is great, as is fever pitch, true grit (Frank McLintock) and the story of Arsenal in N5.
Adams' Addicted, Groves' Perry Groves World and Merson's how not to be a professional footballer just left me feeling that they had no respect for themselves, family, etc and on a selfish note what we as a club could have achieved if they (along with other Tuesday club regulars) been more professional in their approach and behaviour.
Recently read Pauline Black's (from Selecter) book about her childhood (she was mixed race and adopted and suffered with abuse) which was quite harrowing in parts but she obviously overcame her sad childhood to become a very strong, independant, stylish performer.

Have to agree, there's something about the feel and fragrance of books that adds to the reading experience. However,SWLGooner wrote:Fantastic isn't it, although in truth I prefer the 'feel' of a physical book...olgitgooner wrote:I'm going to be reading a lot more books from now on.
My daughter bought me a Kindle for my birthday.
Brilliant. Download any new book for two or three quid. Also read the first chapter for free before you decide to buy or not.
having said that I realise that the |Kindle and all other electronic readers will soon begin to replace paper books AND save many trees etc - which is a good thing.
I have a book collection of around 800 books and so I need to have a sort out and keep my top 100 or so favourite reads - those books I re-read every now and then, I also have a few 'autographed originals' - which might be worth a good price once the Kindle thing becomes everyday for the majority.
Books I'm reading at the mo;(I've always got more than one on the go)
Bees - by Rudolph Steiner (Brilliant Mind and a Genius)
Ghost Rider - Neil Peart (The Drummer with Canadian prog rock band"Rush"...sad and uplifting in equal measure.
The Children of Hurin - Tolkien (had this for over 3 years now and have only just got around to reading it)

Birthday pressie to myself - The Poems - W.B Yeats - Hardback luxury edition....a pleasure to hold and read..poetry just doesn't seem to read as well from a kindle etc as it does from an actual page/book....the last thing I usually read is a poem before going to sleep, really adds to the Deaming

Yes, he was...I once met a woman - I was travelling around the States - yonks ago now, and she was a high academic in the field of Psychology, she had been a pupil of his when she was doing (what we call PhD) and he would tie her up (mentally) in knots and then give her written assignments, then pull them apart and show her the way she might have approached them...she said it helped her move (academically) to a whole new level... she said he was a no nonsense type but also very humorous and humble.Top Londoner wrote:I have to agree with you OBG with regard to Rudolf Steiner.
Talking of great minds etc I have just begun reading Joseph Campbell's 'Myth's To Live By' and 'The Power of Myth'- very good expansive reading - so far!

Too true already many a shop in the highstreet has closed due to high costs of business rates, rent, utility bills and staffing costs and also this new internet thingy, where people are able to order from home on the computor.OneBardGooner wrote:No I know mate, but eventually - many industries/business's are gonna fold because of technology...Up the Ludites I say!![]()

Still an Arsenal legend though and a player I worshipped back in the day.

And his ripping the piss out of Glen Johnson makes good reading.
