Not too much but those transfer fees are just an absolute joke!!! He's played at Lorient for one year and we have to pay £8.5M???!!! Do me a favour please...OnlyGotOneSong wrote:Have you seen him play then?BelgianGooner wrote:Welcome to the club Koscielny... But I have to say we've paid too much for you!!!
I've got nothing against the lad and I hope he wears the shirt with pride next season

Just to be clear, are you passing judgements before you've seen the lad kick a ball?BelgianGooner wrote:Not too much but those transfer fees are just an absolute joke!!! Not at all... I have nothing against him and I'm not passing judgements... I understand he's had a good season but surely we could have got him a lot cheaper!OnlyGotOneSong wrote:Just to be clear, are you passing judgements before you've seen the lad kick a ball?BelgianGooner wrote:Not too much but those transfer fees are just an absolute joke!!! Grouping fans isn't the best idea but you have to sense the irony here. All I ever see from fans on the net is "Wenger doesn't spend enough" or "If only we had bidded more, we would of got (please instert name here). When we go out of our way to sign someone, we get slated for it. It was clear that Wenger wanted him and we tried the "cheaper" bids. We started at 4 mill, which tbf was an insult and we ended up paying what he was worth. The same applies with us, we'd want the highest possible fees for our players if they were leaving, there is no difference.BelgianGooner wrote:Not at all... This isn't an attack on you, im just tired of seeing "fans" being hypocrtical. It's just never good enough for some.

No problem mate, I understand what you say... It's just that I am a bit surprised as he is coming from a mid-table Ligue 1 club (well they finished 7th) and apparently we were the only club that were ready to sign him (so no bidding war)...OnlyGotOneSong wrote:Grouping fans isn't the best idea but you have to sense the irony here. None of us know Koscielny's actual transfer fee, fees are often reported as higher than they are subsequently found out to be.
Considering Vermaelen was "reported" as being £10M, then the "reported" £8.5M for Koscielny seems fair for a mid 20's player.
Cockerill's Chin asks if Talksport talk rubbish in claiming Koscielny's transfer blocks English talent.
I reckon they are talking rubbish.
Wenger gives chances to young English players, whom if good enough will make it.
We have Kyle Bartley and Gavin Hoyte at centre-back, both of whom were loaned out to lower league English clubs last season.
That is surely a decent path for development, it is regular competitive football, something not found in the reserves.
Another step forward for young English players that has been made at Arsenal, is the recent decision for the reserves to withdraw from the reserve league, in favour of talented players either being loaned out, training in the first team squad, or playing occasional friendly reserve games.
The likes of Steve Sidwell, Jerome Thomas, Jermain Pennant, Justin Hoyte, Jay Simpson and Kerrea Gilbert are all reasonable enough English players who have recently come through our youth system.
Either by regular training with the first team squad, loan or transfer they have had a chance to develop and prove their worth, but ultimately have not set the world alight, and were not good enough to be first team regulars at Arsenal.
When players show glimpses of top level talent and work ethic, such as Walcott, Wilshere, Emmanuel-Thomas or Gibbs, they do get the chance to play occasional first team football for us.
It is then up to them to seize the opportunity, show consistency and prove worthy of regular first team starts, as all four of these now have to do this season.
